okay, so I am starting to get a bit new with my stuff, I am considering an SD 40, and my question is between, Kato, Athearn, Blueline, and any others who makes a great plastic SD-40??
nosnoots or anything these babies were new in november 1966 for KCS, and I am modeling 1967
Any input would be apreciated

Justin,
Kato and Athearn are your only choices for an SD40. Of the two there isn't much of a difference, Me? I would go with the Kato. Blueline, if I recall correctly only does a SD40-2, not a SD40 (yes, there is a big difference between the two).

I think with the Kato unit there is less detailing to do, on my MK SD40 build, I started with an Athearn undec SD40, I used A LOT of detail parts to bring it up to the standards of most of today's RTR engines, but it is still a great starting point in my opinion.

I looked at the Athearn unit yesterday at LHS, the quality did not seem that great, a very old mold I suspect, the top piece seems to be very sloppy, if I started with the Athearn what would any of you recomend to be the big fixes, I would like an early SD40 for KCS. Another post with some ligh weathering on a SOO unit has inspired me, not that I do not have enough unfinished business in my shop, I just want to plan correctly when I do the SD40.
As far as the Kato, LHS does not have one, and I try to support them as much as I can, I mean without them I may have not found my way back.

The older Kato SD40 models I believe are the early style with the handbreak in the nose and early wire radiator grills. I think the nose and hand break look like crap on the Kato and I would replace it with a Cannon one. It all depends on how far you want to go. Dave Hussey did some excelent early SD40 models using Atlas GP40 hoods.

Well rivet counting not my cup of tea, but appropriate sideframes, dimensions, handrails, brakes and tanks are some of my concerns, along with the correct fans. things like replacing brakes with cannon detail would be okay for the build, but having to chop the long hood would be beyond, what I would do for a SD40. I can always get some GP30s and start those projects. I would like a good runner, I do DC for now so circuit boards are not necessary but would be nice for that day when I have a full layout and realize that I can not live without DCC.

Take into consideration that the Kato is the better unit for detail and drive, but eveything is molded onto the shell. The Athearn units have nice drives but a crappy shell IMO. BUT, the Athearn has more replaceable and removable parts so a half decent SD40 is achievable from them too.

Alrighty then, Athearn is the way to go then. all of those are excelllent examples of why I should go with Athearn. Anyone have examples of Kato, Bachman, or anything else in plastic that would change my new direction? Scott, Joe, and Jay, you have me inspired, I just need to finish my F-3A, F-3B, and my F9A, two cabooses, and a module and get my passenger stuff painted, decaled and finished. I will pick up one of the Athearn units next trip, and then research which unit to build I now early 600 series of KCS, but I want to be certain they ran through DeQuincy in 1967 or early 1968. If not, I may have to change my era, I can not get past 1969, or my passenger stuff would not be accurate, but that is my problem. Thank you all for your input.

Okay Fellas Went to LHS heres is my start up Athearn RTR SD40 ATSF, will need to strip cost 69.99 Cannon Cab 1502 7.19 Detail Assosicates PyleHead light 1.15 Detail Associates Drop Step 2.29 out the door for under 90.00 I want to examine every aspect of the RTR to see what I can still utilize I realize many of your would replace the Fans, Grills, and Filter. Probably use the Cannon 81" nose and Cab base, but I am trying to keep this under $100. I believe I have the Decals already, but I have to check my stock. I am giddy with anticipation to start this, but I want to finish my F units first, and time has not been a surplus.

I will be finishing my garage spring cleaning before I can start. I am still waiting on my Rail Flyer walk ways and my horns from Minature by Eric that I ordered from Highball Decals. I have to set up a circle of track to make sure that SD40 runs okay, then in the dunk tank she goes, Robert I guess if she was pinstriped, I would have to look for another shell lol.

Most paint is gone, just a bit of paint in the rear grills and the dynamic filter, I will use my new air eraser on it and be done with the stripping. I have decided this will become the "old" KCS 605, and Rudy it later became Conrail 6963. The new 605 was something else previously I think either CNW or CP. I have found a couple shots but nothing of the roof, does any one have roof shots of KCS 605 prior to 1970??

Sorry folks, I am slow. the shell is stripped, a few parts came off after the soak, but all reapplied now, it appears some parts were held on by paint alone. The air eraser took off the paint from the nooks and crannies. I am on the fence about replacing the end on the long hood. I am keeping the Athearn fans, but the cab, cab base and short nose is going to be all Cannon. I have been sanding and buffing the parting lines, any suggestions how to best separate the fans from the grills? My first pair of Fs are still the priority, but I just want to get all three down to raw plastic.
