I started this Athearn SD-40 this week. I purchased this unit from an eBay seller that specializes in "less than pristine" items. This SD-40 will get the same treatment as my SD40-2. I've already "milled" the frame down and added the Cannon High Hood and a few details. The Athearn SD-40 has an 88" nose, so I had to fill in a chevron shaped area in front of the nose as I did on the Dash 2. I also have this ATLAS C30-7 I'm going to add a few details onto and then let 'er be. Then there's the matter of this ATLAS C-420 I've aquired in it's present state. In time it will be N&W #2578 in the 13D Scheme like the dash 7. And last on the list is this ATLAS RS-36 that will meet a simular fate with one big suprise.

i am wondering why you had to mill the frame To make it more like the prototype so I could add the T Beams and Traction Motor Cables.

Is that like the SOO SD-40-2 in Railmodel Journal a few months ago? He made the beams part of the shell.

All SD40-2s are the same from the walkways down pretty much.

Thanks Andrew! I used Testors Black Chrome enamel and laquer thinner. My airbrush is a Badger Internal Mix gun I've used since 1975.

Anyway yeah, It looks like you get a nice gloss finish with that paint. Now that they are painted, it begs the question.........when will we see the finished models? I know I Can't wait!! -Andrew

I had some brand new Shellscale decals, and they all just crack. I think his coating is too thin on these. Anyone have some Microscale or Herald King 13D they wanna sell? Nobody takes paypal anymore.

Randy, I have heard that if you spray your decals with glosscoat it will seal the decals an dprevent cracking. I have never tried this but it sound like it would work. -Andrew

I have heard that too. Also, when I make my decals, I use testors decal bonder. That might work.

I was having the same problem with those MEC nose stripes in the Microscale set. They (microscale) recommended their liquid decal film. Works good but you need to be careful with it as I ruined some of my third set by accidentially getting a dot the stuff on the backside of the decals. Good thing I had two other sets that had problems to get a piece of strip from.
Barring that, if you have either some gloss or dullcoat around spray a good coat on there and let it set for a day or two. I seal any decals I make on an inkjet that way and it works great.
