Has anyone here ever built a GP30 B unit? I need some roof shots to recreate the short cabless hood.
The only proto pics I can find are all UP conversions and I do not see any modern short lines with a B unit, so maybe they were not too popular? Can anyone fill me in on the popularity or lack thereof? I guess B units were wreck rebuilds. Maybe these units just did not survive wrecks very well?
Was the UP the only railroad to build these? Did they scrap them all long before any shortlines would be interested in the extra power?

I've only seen 1 UP GP30B, it has an interesting roof line, sorry can't help you much.
According to Railpictures.net there were only 40 GP30B's ever built and UP owned all of them, and the pics of them are around 1979/80 don't know how long they lasted.

If I recall, there was an article in Mainline Modeler some years ago on UP's GP30Bs. By doing a keyword search at index.mrmag.com I was able to find it plus a modeling article. index.mrmag.com/tm.exe?opt=S&cmdtext=gp30b&MAG=ANYThe Mainline Modeler article was in the Oct. 1989 issue, and the modeling article was in the July 2004 issue of Model Railroading. The UP GP30Bs were built that way at EMD. No other RR ever owned any. as a side note: When GP30 #844 was delivered to UP, they renumbered the 4-8-4 steam loco from #844 to #8444.

Like Dan said, they were built new at EMD, not UP wreck rebuilds. I did a Google search and found this:

YEAH !!!! A roof photo. That is easier than I thought it might be. I am just going to cut the cab up and use the basic shape from the cab. The cab blister angles in toward the center, but it is not impossible to use it. So, what started this crazy idea? Well, I ended up with a Athearn GP30/GP35 frame. Needing some 4-axle power, I rooted through my junk boxes for something that might fit. At some point, someone gave me a pre-spectrum GP30 which is totally useless to serious modelers, right? Is there such a thing as a Bathearn? Let me get the paint stripped and see where we are at. It was free, so I have to at least try. If anyone has information on what UP did with them, that would be great. The assumption is that they were cut up... Well, maybe just one survived to run with a GP35? It will be a fictional road, I bet it could work. Whatcha think?
