Randy,
They started out as Athearn U30B's. I cut a section of 4 engine compartment doors out of the body and a corresponding length from the fuel tank.

I have been working on rosters for the several roads I am going to utilize. My main iterest has always been the Milwaukee Road from Winona to Red Wing Minnesota, along with the interchanges in and around Winona with the CNW, GBW and BN, all set in the mid-70's. The problem? I have a fascination with the big Alco's, as well as Baldwins and FM's. Sadly, while some of these roads rostered some of these beasties, most were not used anywhere near the area I 'need' to do. So, I change the world, using as my main protofreelance road the St Paul & St Louis, which was formed when the CCD&M (a road taken over by the Milwaukee in the real world) remains independent and absorbes the MSTL (after the Rock Island lost control of it in the 1890's) and several smaller roads. We utilize trackage rights on the Milwaukee from Winona to Hastings and/or St Paul.
The Minnesota Midland (which was in reality a narrowguage road running west out of Wabasha, taken over by the Milwaukee and standard guaged) remained semi-independent, and is now controlled by a holding company owned by SPSL.
The Winona Bridge & Terminal (a growth of the real Winona Bridge company, the owning company of the GBW/BN bridge into Winona) formed to simplify switching operations of the roads in Winona, and took over some of the CGW operations between Winona & Rochester after the SPSL took control of the CGW in 1969 after the CGW/CNW merger fell through.
I also will use a leasing company, Transportation Resources (TREX) which initially specialized on Baldwins, much like Relco originally who leased only Alco switchers.
Actual roster info will come later, but the SPSL is like the SPS, buying only Alco's in the 1960's, the MM runs with oddbal EMD's, and the WBT (I am still up in the air about doing this one) uses used Baldwins from various sources.

Looks good. Baldwin isn't mentioned much here. I only have 2 in my collection.

Along with the changes to the Minnesota Midland, the Winona Bridge and Terminal is being somewhat downsized. No plans for operations over the CNW main using ex-cgw trackage rights. When WBT was formed (mid-1950's) they recieved 2 switchers each from most of the main constituant roads. The GBW contributed the engine house. The engines ranged from old (1940's built VO-1000) to ancient (HH-600) to decidedly weird (an ex-CGW 800hp Westinghouse centercab). Most were ready to fall apart if looked at too hard. By 1960, something had to be done. Units were failing daily, and the world only has a limited supply of bailing wire. The worst offenders were replaced in 1960 by a pair of EMD RS-1325s and in 1961 an ex Union Belt of Detroit NW-5 was purchased. The final relics were replaced with 3 leased TREX Baldwin switchers.

The Minnesota Midland has a bad combination of light track, less than stellar roadbed, sharp curves, and steep grades. The RS-1s were tried in road service when delivered, and failed misserably. Too light and under powered for these duties, they excelled in yards and light locals on the branches and the west end. The light Baldwins filled the same role, and the Midland waited until suitable power came along to dieselize the mainlines. Baldwin was first on the scene with a six powered axle unit with the DRS-6-6-15, and extensive testing was done before a commitment was made. A combination of light weight, high tractive effort, and a familiarity with Baldwin (much of their steam were Baldwins) worked well for the railroad. The DT-6-6-20s were an attempt to tame the east end grades, but proved to be not much of an improvement over the standard DRS, and tended to be used system wide. The SD-39s and -2's continue the light unit theme (smaller engine block than the SD-38, small fuel tanks), without going to the extremes of the SDL-39s as built for the Milwaukee.
I have always liked the big Baldwins, and Stewarts AS-616.

The Union Industrial Railroad is a 35 mile branch line located in the southwest where it looks like Arizona at one end and Kansas at the other. It services the towns of Brooklyn, Holley, Saguara and Barrow. BNSF will run occasional overflow traffic over UIR rails. The UIR currently has two second hand locomotives until future purchases can be made but borrows from BNSF as the need arrises.

On occasion, you'll see these BNSF loco's as well.

One last thing has been nagging me about the Minnesota Midland roster, no switchers! I like Baldwin switchers, and I had none. So, I adjusted the roster a little.
New and improved Minnesota Midland all time roster as of 1975:
100-102 VO-1000 built 1945-1946 103-104 DS-4-4-10 built 1947 (608NA engines) 105-106 DS-4-4-10 built 1949 (606SC engines) 107 S-12 built 1951 200-201 DRS-4-4-10 built 1948 (steam generators) 202 RS-12 bult 1951 (steam generators) 203-204 RS-12 ex-MILW bought 1975, switcher trucks 300-302 DRS-6-6-15 built 1949 (steam generators) 303 DRS-6-6-15 built 1950 304-311 AS-616 built 1951-1952 312-315 AS-616 ex-SP bought 1967-1968, dynamic brakes 400-403 DT-6-6-20 built 1949-1950 500-502 SD-39 built 1968-1969 503-505 SD-39-2 built 1973, only known order
The retirements and dispositions will change as well, I will refigure that info later. I figure about 2/3 to 1/2 of the DRS, DT, RS and AS units will remain, and the remaining switchers transfered to the TREX lease fleet.
One item of note. The RS-1's are gone. While the roster was based in part on that of the DSSA, I felt that they detracted from the overall concept I wanted to achieve.

Some more changes, and simplifications. I deleated several old roster posts, leaving the pevious one in place.
First off, I have killed the idea of the Winona Bridge and Terminal. RIP, Gone, Dead.
Next, The Minnesota Midland in 1968 bought the Winona-Rochester-Osage trackage (the remainins of the Winona Southwestern) fom the CGW, along with 4 DS-4-4-10's. These switchers were stored, then transfered to the TREX lease fleet in 1968, never being on the MM roster. Locomotives were borrowed from parent SPSL until until new power arrived in 1968 and 1969. The remaining MM Baldwin switchers joined the TREX lease fleet by 1970.
New Roster for the Minnesota Midland is as follows:
100-102 VO-1000 built 1945-1946 103-104 DS-4-4-10 built 1947 105-106 DS-4-4-10 built 1948 107 S-12 bult 1951 150-152 SW-1500 built 1968 (Flexicoil trucks) 200-201 DRS-4-4-10 built 1948 (steam generators) 202 RS-12 bult 1951 (steam generators) 203-204 RS-12 ex-MILW bought 1975, switcher trucks 250-251 RS-1325 built 1960 (Flexicoil trucks) 252 NW-5 ex- Detroit Terminal bought 1961 300-303 DT-6-6-20 built 1949-1950 400-403 DRS-6-6-15 built 1949-1950 (steam generators) 404-411 AS-616 built 1951-1952 (409-411 have dynamic brakes) 500-502 SD-39 built 1968-1969 (dynamic brakes) 503-504 SD-39-2 built 1973, only known order (dynamic brakes)
2 VO-1000 traded in on RS-1325's 1960 Rest Baldwin switchers transfered to TREX 1969-1970 1 DRS-4-4-10 also to TREX 1970 2 DT-6-6-20's retired, 1 1968, other 1974 2 DRS-6-6-15 and 3 AS-616 traded in to EMD 1968-1973
As it stands now, I will have just the 2 proto-freelance rosters to deal with (plus the lease fleet), as well as the prototype roads (BN, CNW, GBW, and MILW). I felt that with the size of Winona, the Terminal concept was pushing the limits.

My line is still in the planning stages. I have always been a Boston and Maine fan. My line was a terminal road affiliated with the B&M and New Haven, based in Eastern New York. It heads east toward the Berkshires. It is called Albany Troy and Berkshire. When David Fink and Timothy Mellon decided to switch from playing with trains, and went into planes, We took over. Here is my roster:
F7 BL2 (From Monhart collection RS3M (rebuild from NH later PC affiliation) SW9 SW1500 GP7 (B&M specs have train lighting boxes) GP9 GP18 GP15 GP38-2 (Ordered for PC, since they were bust and couldn't finance. Returned to us on 4-1-76) GP40-2 GP40 (ex CR used bought in power shortage) B23-7 (New AAR trucks Last Alcos used as trade- in credit) B40-8 GP60 GP60M (Canadian leaders for CV-CN runthroughs) GP35 (High hood bought for a canceled rebuild program similar to BN's GP30 and 35 to GP39. Used as a spare)
I mainly use high horsepower 4 axle units like the B&M did.

Since I have a lot more locos than i use to.I've decided to get back on my RR.
LANX SD40T-2 3896 LANX SD40T-2 3897 LANX SD50 4000 LANX GP15 2317 LANX SD45 B unit 2316
I like PEIR's idea of the his RR being owned by GW,an since many Shortlines here are owned by GW or WAMX, i might do a SD40T-2 in the GW scheme since they have a nicer scheme. I'm still think of a scheme for the LANX.
