Several years ago I picked up one of the Athearn R-T-R SP SD45T-2s at a train show, I think it was the 9330. My intention was to build a model of NREX 9337, as it turned out, I ended up swapping the 9330 to a friend for the unnumbered unit that I ended up using. About a month ago I finally got started on this... Out of the box, after I started removing the handrails- I purchased Details West's DS-339 detail kit, as it has most of the needed parts. As a general reference, I followed Donnell Wells' excellent guide to detailing SP SD45T-2s - shastaroute.railfan.net/Model-SD45T-2_TOC.htmlFirst I removed the cab, side frames, handrails and fuel tank. I started detailing by adding the brake pipes and sanding brackets to the trucks. I then moved on and did the fuel tank and cab - Then I masked and painted out the speed lettering on the long hood, removed the "SP" from the nose and added the black patch where the CEFX marks were painted out -

Next, I did the air piping and under frame detailing. I pretty much just added everything that came in the DW kit. I also added lift rings to the long hood and A-Line wipers to the cab. Then I started putting everything back together. I added DA 1027 ditch lights. Very few of the NREX units BNSF leased, including 9337, were lead qualified, so non operating ditch lights will suffice. I blanked out the class lights using BLMAs great set of light covers. I took some liberties with the pilot detail. The cut bar runs on the outside of the anti-climber supports, unlike the prototype which has the cut bar running through the supports. Thankfully, it's not that noticeable with the plow installed. I added DW air hoses and the plow from the detailing kit. It was hard to find any good uncoupled shots of the front of the unit, but it appears to have dummy MU plugs installed in front of the middle stanchions. I used DW MU-236 to replicate this. 9337 is now about 85% complete. I took a couple more shots today, the sun never seems to shine around here lately- I plan on adding grabs to the top of the plow, a whip antenna, frame lights and a handbrake chain. I'm just waiting on parts. Maybe traction motor cables... wait I need to stop. Then it needs weathered, of course. The prototype is actually pretty clean- www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=31209www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=25657www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=13608From 2004-2006, 9337 was leased to BNSF, then it was leased to CP during 2007-2008. It's likely parked in the weeds at Silvis now. In the spring of 2006 I had 9337 and NREX 4279 as trailing units on a H KCKLAU. I want to eventually do the 4279 also, it's a prime example of how not to hide the former owner's identity- www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=24994

Very nice work. I was going to say that it's way to clean being that it was an SP unit, but the prototype seems to be fairly well kept...so I guess there really is a prototype for everything (even clean SP units ).

Nice work! What is it about the SP paint job that is so appealing? I have loved that paint job since I was a kid.

Nice work indeed.
I have two of those non-numbered SD45T-2's. I am doing the same thing, except for my home road.
Nice truck work as well- truck work is a great and underated process in detailing and modeling.
Thanks Matt

Nice work there, I've actually seen the 9337 numerous times...thought about modeling it, but just couldn't patch out SP! lol Nothin like Speed Lettering! And, I agree: (1) those BLMA headlight covers are awesome!, and (2), trucks are overlooked way too much, lately I've been really working on improving them on all my models. Look forward to seeing finished pix!
