That's a really nice looking engine. One question; did GMTX close up the end rails or are walkway chains to be added later?

On the right side make sure you get all those bubbles out of the decals. I can see where they are not laying down. I hate when that happens.

bubbles: how do I deal with that? Use a pin to make holes? then add more solva-set? chains: complete oversight, so now yes the chains will be added later. thanks for the compliments guys!

The blue was the bright blue I was originally looking for, I ordered it online, came in 2 days... no more LHS for paint if they don't have it on the rack already. & nope, I haven't gloss/dulcoated this yet. I left it at club last night in my locker. I'll go and see if it's just glare or if the decals are really bubbled. It ran great. These new P2ks have Kato clone motors & trucks now instead of the Athearn clone stlye.
AND, one of the grab irons broke on the nose, hangin on by one side. gotta replace that too now. But once this is done I can get back on the gp39e.

looks great and as for the bubbles in the decals use some more decal set and they should suck right down!

I've poked holes in decals before if they have bubbles to get the microsol/set to suck them down. Just be very careful and only poke in the clear areas, ortherwise you'll be able to see blue showing thru the white lettering.

ok, so I haven't done anything to this unit, except run it... it does run as is. there are no bubbles in the decals (thank god) by the way... it was just a reflection. I still have to gloss/dull coat.
BUT, as for making a smurf... Someone on the BNSF yahoo group I'm in noted that 2051 (and reportedly all the 38s BNSF got) were standard units. I have to look into that, I thought some of them were -2s. Anyway, Atlas is the only recent maker I can think of that made a non -2 model. I might be doing one since Microscale changed their renumber decal sheet to include the proper size logos to make a smurf. I just need to get a gp38, toytrain has em for a buck...

Dan,
Just FYI I would get that thing cleared as soon as possible or the decals will react with the clear and ruin your model.

Looks GREAT! Is that the same blue that is on the BNSF "swoosh"ed GP38s? Looks like it, and it would make sense..........just curious.
Anyway, take care of that decal issue with a few light hits with solvaset if you haven't clear-coated yet, and it'll be just fine. Make sure to let each application dry thoroughly between applications! And, it doesn't hurt to raid the wife's medicine cabinet and use some Q-tips(pre-dipped in solvaset).
Again, great job!

Hey Rick,
Yes, it is the same blue as this (GATX) is where the smurfs come from. Though they are standard GP38s (I think all smurfs are; I'll check up on that later) they are from this same group. BNSF did little more than replace the logos, probably because these all have fresh paint, and there's other locs out there with paint about to fall off. I don't know how they decide, but I do know it costs about 30k to do it per unit!

Thanks. I was curious because I have a friend who may want me to do one of the "smurfs" for him.
