Hi all, I have an undecorated SD90/43MAC from Kato. I posted some drawings over in the Colorin' section I colored, got a few suggestions, and now I'm throwing paint. Parts, ready for painting Two sessions later, with the dark green and the silver on the unit. This is my first time working with enamels, so we'll be doing some experimenting with them. I like the results so far. Kevin

Yeah, well, after the Big Boy's were retired, UP has been looking for something to fill THOSE shoes, so they just keep increasing the specifications and seeing what EMD and GE came up with!
For me, that's part of the draw, that they are ARE that big.

I like the way the color scheme is turning out. So this is your first time with enamels? How do you like the way they go on? Were you using acrylics before? I swore off those this last weekend! lol
Just a side note, did you hear about the AC 6000s being cut up due to their newness vs. too high emissions ratio? Someone told me those gonna be gone real soon.
Anyway, looks good so far!

I'm not sure what UP has planned for their AC6000CW's, but CSX is having their fleet rebuilt with the same 12 cylinder 4,400 HP engines that are in the ES44DC's and AC's. CSX has also stated that all ES44DC's, ES44AC's (and maybe AC4400's?) are being derated to 4,000 HP because of the risk of blowing turbo chargers, IIRC. By the way, great looking 90MAC! Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Hi all,
Yes, this whole enamel thing is a bit of a learning process. I'm not sure I like what happened so far. I think I'll be stripping it and starting over. Not because of the enamels, mind you, just because I'm learning, and this isn't turning out as nice as I want.
The first coat of green I shot came straight from the bottle. No thinner or anything at all. Turned out very dark, but that was the look I was going for.
Now I have the right thinner, I'm shooting some areas I missed earlier. The color change is pretty drastic. I don't like the way it looks, and I don't like the finish on the earlier shoot. Like I said, this is a learning process. I do like the thin-ness I can get with enamels, I just have to learn how to work with it. I'm going to let them cure overnight, and see what I think.

Hi all, I've been busy with these units since the last posting. The unit I painted didn't turn out, so it went in the stripper, then to a friend and his sandblaster, and then back to me. I've been shooting paint since last Sunday, and things are looking GOOD! The biggest thing I've figured out is how much thinner/paint to use, so the paint is going on a lot smoother than before. This is still a learning curve, since I'm trying to figure out how much is too much now that the paint is thinned, but I think we're getting the hang of it. Here is where the units are at right now. And here is a picture of them back to back. I recall somebody said they thought that would be a cool thing to see, so here they are. I will be shooting more paint on Sunday, the blue needs some touch up, and the green also. After that, the handrails and detail parts need paint, and after all that, then there is the decals. Still not quite sure if I'm gonna do something custom with that or not. It doesn't bother me too much, but there is a fade from the silver to the blue that I'd have done differently if I had known that would turn out that way. I shot the green first, then the silver, but I didn't mask the sliver on the bottom, so the blue was shot over the silver overspray. Looking at it, I should have shot the silver first, like I did the first time, and I'd have that fade effect on the blue and the green. THAT would have looked neat! Oh well. Now I've gotta do ANOTHER unit in this paint scheme, so I can try that! The question is, what unit should I do? I have a swap meet coming up next month, so suggestions would be great! I'm half kinda thinking to pick up an SD60 and do an SD60F, but I'm not sure I want to sink the money into that right now. A GP40-2W, maybe a GP22ECO rebuild might be a neat one to do. I'm not sure at this point, though. What do you all think? Another thought one of the guys at the club had, and I'd half considered, is doing a B-unit between these two units. I'm not sure about a B-unit, so much as doing a fuel tender, perhaps one of those big turbine fuel tenders, or some other tank car with a tall enough tank I can run the paint scheme across it and tie it in with the locomotive paint schemes. IMHO a big beefy fuel tender would be awesome, but that's just me.
DUDE this paint scheme rocks!!! It looks like these babies are goin 80 mph just sittin on the workbench! They definitely look like passenger units! AWESOME JOB!
I can't wait to see 'em finished!

I have to agree, a large tender would look great! The B unit though... I think that would be cheesy. Just my $.02.

Looks great back to back, and they are giving me ideas for my undec Kato, namely that two are required. Matthew

@stephen I don't have one, I'm planning on doing these for a private owner, Raeder Industries. RIDX for reporting marks, numbers are yet to be decided. That way the units can show up anywhere and not be out of place. I'm not thinking lease units, more like privately owned test bed units or heavy haul/special dimensional load shipments, where it would make sense to have a full train dedicated to moving whatever was being moved, engines and all. MatthewYeah, that's where things get expensive. Still, matching paint schemes do look nice!

It is actually coming along well. I have painted the bodies, finished up the handrails, and now am working on detail parts. I'm running out of paint, so I'll be squeezing the last few drops out so I can brush paint a few things, but that'll be okay, I think.
