I am modeling this unit www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1311209Logic would dictate that it would have an 81" nose as it is an early production unit, but it has the post 1981 tiolet hatch on the nose which would suggest an 88" nose. Anybody have any resources that might point me in the right direction? I have both rescued a BB GP40-2 from the scrap bin and cut off nose and subbase to replace with the Chessie doors and if I am going to all this trouble I would like to put right nose on.

The unit you are modeling is ex-B&O 4111, so it's definately an early unit with the shorter nose. Also, the lack of a front anti-climber would point to it being an 81". I wonder if the toilet hatch on the nose was an in-house, as opposed to out-house (....ok bad joke), modificaication performed by CSX?

I saw the door and handrail. Figured handrail was easy part just thought maybe at some point it got a nose job. I would agree definately an in-house job for the outhouse.

Guys, I'm not 100% sure that is a plate on top of the nose at all. Look close, blow it up and it appears that is the window opening on the building in the background. If you blow it up you can see that it isn't there in front of the pole.
And those that I've been on, I've not seen a conventional plate.

Hey Matt take a look at the first picture on my first post and if you look to the left of the sand filler you can see the plate but also notice it is not to the right of the sand filler as a factory hatch would be...
