This is an un-powered Athearn SD40- with a Rail Power B unit cab spliced on. I bought the Rail Power components for a $1.50 and the un-powered unit for about $20.00. Added grab irons and lift rings, not much other detail. I had to custom bend the side railings, over all they came out okay.
Not up to the standards of everyone here and it is a freelanced unit as well. I had the stuff and some extra decals and enjoyed building it.
As a new member felt I should post something to get started.

The only person I expect to detail to my satisfaction is me. There are guys at all levels of detailing here. I'm learning from and being inspired by many of the posts. Your engine looks fine to me. From your description, it fits the catagory also. Keep detailing and grow along with the rest of us.

I agree with everyone else, thinking you have done a fine job on the engine and as you stated yourself you "enjoyed building it" and thats what counts.

I agree with previous posts...I think you did a GREAT job! And as long as you are happy with your handiwork, then it's all down hill from there! Keep 'em coming!

Hey, looks good to me! Of course, I'm biased towards modern "B" units in any case. I have nine of them in my fleet! One thing I will warn you about, (and this happened to me,) you'll start looking at other locomotives and thinking "Hey, I could build that!" and things will get expensive quick. Beware!

It's a good build....and cheap too . But regardless of what skill level you have, model railroading is supposed to be fun and as you do more projects, you'll find that your skills will grow. Heck, I have yet to post any projects on the boards so you're already doing better than me!

Most important thing, if you like it, then GOOD ENOUGH! The only person you have to please is yourself!

I think it looks pretty darn good, even if everyone said they didn't like it, who cares, as long as you're happy with it that's all that matters! Great Job! Please post more pix of your work...we'd all like to see it

would you like one more post saying great job & the only opinion that counts is your own? k,
Great Job,.. the only opinion that counts is you own.
ok, but seriously, B units are by no means on the 'easy' list, I think anyway. Once you're cuttin off the sub-base & nose of an Athearn Blue Box (thicker plastic shell) you're up a level.

Never be concerned with your level of detailing with this group. We have a wide variety of skilled members on here and we can all learn something new and by the way cool "B" unit I know I know, the new guy digging up old threads, But I agree, that is sweet, and the handrails, they don't look hand bent at all, they are really sweet, good job. Now what Peir said, we all learn something new, well I just did, I did not know railpower made or sold B unit cabs, Where do you find these in the Walthers Catalog? I've always wanted to do a BN SD40-2 B unit.
