The old Atlas/Roco version I see. Nice work. The new Atlas has much finer details. I have 2 of the new ones I plan on using for Precision National lease units. Most were left in full Southern paint with some just getting an added Precision logo, and a few getting the added logo and the Southern lettering removed. They were very commonly seen on the Milwaukee Road this way for a year or two. They were then rebuilt, de-turboed, and sold to the CNW along with some ex-SP units as psuedo SD-18's.

The newer Atlas units are a completely new model compared to the Roco based ones. Much finer and more accurate detail, with RR specific details applied on each version. Much thinner handrails, better fan and radiator representation, and an accurate plastic fuel tank with detail. The biggest visual giveaway, however, is the areas on the sub-base of the cab. The real locomotives have steps from the walkway to the cab recessed behind a steel plate, and the newer versions show this quite well. The older Roco units have this as a solid area. Lastly, on the Roco built units, they used the same trucks as the Model Power E-units (also made by Roco) to save money. They put on flexicoil sideframes on these slightly too long trucks and said 'Good enough'.
Roco kept control of the Atlas tooling for the original production units, and the GP-38 & 40 and SD-35 have been available at times from Con-Cor, but I'm not sure about the SD-24. the old Atlas FP-7 has been available from several different companies.

hey thanks. i think it turned out pretty good considering it's only the third or fourth one I've done. i just wished it pulled better. the motor that is in it is weak.

I'm a firm believer in "run whatcha brung" and I'm sure the Roco version is readily available and costs less. It's not too hard to fix the cab and steps if you know what to do. There are all kinds of the newer Atlas cabs and hoods on evilbay. Buy the newer parts, cut the old Roco up and install the new.

Some Atlas Roco units do not have flywheels, and if yours does not this is a good place to start. But be careful as to the diameter. I measured the clearance to the frame to make the largest I could and be sure that I had clearance to the frame. What I should have done is measured the inside of the shell! As I now have larger flywheels than the shell can take, it is going under a Hornby Hymek shell. Matthew

i don't think the engine slip's, i think the motor in it is just weak. from what i remember, i can hold the coupler & give it full power & it won't spin. it does have flywheels on it. i've thought about remotoring it, but i don't have a clue where to get one or what to get.
