Hey All, Here is the gp39M I was talking about in another thread. This is a Lionel made for Bachman shell, with cab, nose and some parts of subbase from a p2k and the rest of the sub from leftover cannon parts. These parts are all from the gp39e project I'm working on. Even the fans are from the p2k, but I am starting to think I should just put in Cannon fans... what'da all think? This is going to be numbered BNSF 2831; www.trainpix.com/BNSF/EMDRBLD/GP39M/2831B.HTMI really like the remote antennas. Either the gp39 or 50 will be getting the same remote antenna additions.

I'd stay with the P2K fans, adding the excellent Cannon fans to an average body would be a waste. I had this same decision to make on my SD30 build.

Thanks guys. Dan I was kinda thinking the same thing. It would be better to keep the detail level even through the whole model. If I add cannon fans, the question may be, then why do those radiator grilles look like that ect.

That looks pretty sharp, this is going to be a great build, love that GP30 body style still hanging on a class 1 road in 2009

I like your recycling theme you have going on similar to what BN did when they rebuilt the prototypes. I got some photos of a GP39M last winter the BNSF had in Fort Madison Iowa from a lease Co they were using in the yard there.

Hey Larry,
Is that an area to see a lot of different roads? I'd like to do some long range railfanning maybe this summer if everything goes as planned. All my projects are in slow speed at best right now as I'm spent/busy with one thing or another... ah life... constantly getting in the way of my hobby...

I've been doing a lot of demolition stuff, cutting off sub bases long hood ends ect., but I did do some construction. Here I installed bits of styrene in gaps between the hood and cabs. The other project is a SD9-3, wide body Athearn so it probably won't get a post...

ok Stephan, that's as far as I got with that one, I'll put in updates to that here, since most of the work will involve installing the new cabs.
I'm also cutting down yet another Athearn gp38-2. I just stripped an SD40-2 and gp38-2 2264 (re: melted head/tail lights post) and will try to save as much of the details as I did on that one. Then it'll get this treatment as well. I figured if I have all these on the self at one time in pieces, maybe I should work on them at one time and get as many done (neatly) as possible. But I'm not rushing, nnaaaaaaawwwwww....

Thats a neat project, I'll be following this one closely. I have a couple of those Lionel for Bachmann GP30's and I was looking to rework them for my freelance RR. If possible could you put up a list of all the parts you used?
Thanks Manny
P.S. I love the BN GP39M's, especially the franken-loco rebuilds with the regular cabs. A few of them are down here in Arizona working the locals on the Peavine.

sure, I'll put up a list of parts, but it's actually got less than the average build. The thing I'm doing differently is adding the P2K cab nose & parts from the sub-base since I am actually modeling 2751 using a P2K.
I got the cab ect. on pretty nice now. I'm working on the pilots, once I get that done I'll post a new pic and a parts list.

Hey Manny,
wow, I put a project on the back burner and look... no parts list! Man I'm a slacker! Really nothing out of the ordinary; lift rings, grab irons, mu hoses & cables, fans short hood cab & part of the sub-base from the P2k, the rest from a cannon sub base kit, horn & fire cracker antenna and or whichever I need for the model, I keep changing my mind about which # I want to do.
Anyway, I built up the low end of the pilot and fitted for the pilot buffer plate, which will get modified. In another thread I was talking about these and that one part isn't right for all locos... so with some filing it looks ok. I did that for the gp39e.
Now I have to file the frame so I can fit the body. Then I can tell how high I should mount the buffer plate. Once I do that I can move much faster on the M. Lately I've been working on these prepainted units, not a lot of work, fans, pilot details, installing anticlimbers & ditch lights, but I find myself walking on eggshells trying not to ruin the rest of the paintjob as I work.

Neat project. I think one of those used to hang around Naperville IL (I may have a pic or two of it). Always thought it was a neat looking loco.
Yours is looking good so far, can't wait to see more of it.
