It wasn't my intent on doing a fan project on this loco, but it happened out of necessity. I am now transplanting the Tsunami into this Atlas Trainman gp38-2. I bought the Trainman out of sheer curiosity, to see what the difference was between that and the reuglar series. Anyway, now that the sound is going in this, I wanted fans that would let the sound out. Since I don't have a ton of extra cannon fans around (although I'm going to order a bunch of fans and stanchions from Railflyer in a week or so just to have, since I have the projects to justify it...) I did this: The fan grilles are from Detail Associates. Actually one will be a Cannon grille, and the blades are from the P2K gp30 to gp39e project, which is getting Cannon fans. The blades are recycled and the grilles from DA cost 3 bucks. I just felt like doing this to see how it'd come out!

ok, here's the fans done. I did a few other things to this model, but I just thought I'd be fun to show the fans in this section. Still I think I'm under $100. anyway, here's how they came out:

Diesel, thanks for the pics. I have a couple of KATO SD40-2's that I'm putting Tsunamis and small oval speakers in and the fan idea would work great on them. Keep up the good work.

Arrgg, now you got me wanting to do all my darn locomotive fans.... lol..
Looks nice, how did you cut the housings out, and how would this work for units that don't have Q fans?

Hey Larry,
I just noticed your question... I use a cone shaped stone in a dremel on slow speed. Starting in the center of the fan, push in and then remove what you want to take out. Once the big pieces are moved away you can still use the dremel on the slowest speed to clean the edges touching very lightly. But, in retrospect, cannon fans look nicer no matter how you slice it. I just wanted to do this cause I had the grills from DA and the fan blades from p2k fans.

Not to be outdone, I like to endeavor into the Cheap Build catagory myself also. But we still need to support our Fellow Member and Pal Dave Hussey at Cannon & Company. Dave is one of us and shares the hobby as a contributing Member here.

I have not yet invested in anyones fans, other than what came on my RTR Athearn and Highliner kit. I might go for a hood and cab base but I am waiting to lay it all out and see what it all looks like together.

Andy, I used the DA fan grills on my BN 6330 and CP 5482. I followed an article the Aug. '95 "Model Railroading" and the author used Overland Models fan blades. They paired up to add a lot of roof detail. Currently I'm using the Cannon parts.

If you read the Plano descriptions, he has one grille that is a lighter mesh than the other, I think it is the DB grille. I have seen the 2 versions side by side and the finer one is quite nice. As an alternative for cheap fan blades, you can buy the Atlas GP38/40 ones for pennies, I think it is 3 or 4 for less than $1

Robert, thanks for the photos. This looks like just the parts needed to retrofit fans without trying to match paint.
