Trim off mounting pin on step light and drill #81 hole where you removed the pin. Heat the end of a strand of 010" fiber optic material to form a bulb tip and thread the fiber optic through the drilled-out step light and glue in place with ACC. I use a separate light source inside the carbody of the locomotive to light them up.

Robert,
Looks great! The only reason I'm going with LED's vs. the fiber optic cable (which I plan on using in a few spots for a lens) is trying to route it through the shell. The small magnet wire makes it VERY easy to run anywhere you need it to go like in my case which will end up to a centralized circuit board mounted to the top of the shell. Plus I don't have to figure out how to mount the light source and such. Another problem with the fiber optics if you make a hard 90 degree bend in them it really cuts down on the brightness. But the prototype step lights aren't super bright anyways and I'm using very large resistors to cut the amount of light down for a more prototypical look. I've tested the fiber optic theory before and I wasn't very pleased with the results. Once you add sound with a speaker plus the other lights, your room inside the shell diminishes very quickly.

you could usethis same idea for class lights as well, i might have to give it a try!

ok, I have been reading old threads for several hours now to catch up on the 2 years I have missed out. After a few cold ones I think I am halucinating? Is that for real. Holy cow! awesome. I love it. I have messed with fiber optics a little. I ca'd end to light behind light under neath. They are cool. Super cool bro!
