The project will be a CN GMD 1, and I want to get started this fall/winter.
So here's where I'd like to get some of your experienced knowledge and thoughts on this project.
Two versions of trucks were used, 4 or 6 axels although I think the 6's look better.
The frame is not your standard switcher frame so what would you use and or make and two versions of steps were also used.
The body is also longer and would probably need to be pieced together.
The stacks were of two versions also, but I like the looks of the duals with dual tips on them.
Detail parts would also be needed.
Finally after all of that is done, would you paint it in the old green/yellow scheme or one of the red/white/black versions.
Any and all information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Colin

Hello everyone.
As Miguel said, it's a nice kitbashing project. If you can find one of the Point One models, pay whatever you have to to get it. It will save you a lot of work.
As far as kitbashing, it has a similar frame in wheelbase as a GP9, but the trucks are flexicoil. The six axle trucks will be a problem, as the prototypes had a smaller middle wheelset than the outside axles. There are no trucks available for this in any scale except for the ones that come with the Point One kit. The four axle trucks are the basic Athearn flexicoil, which are widely available and fairly inexpensive.
You're looking at a lot of work, but then again, so am I. I'm looking into building one of these once I can get myself a little more money and a lot more time. Good luck with your project.
And, as for paint, there is always the third option: Northern Alberta Railways. They owned some before being taken over by CN...

Wow - that Frateschi truck even has the 36" middle idler wheel. Hmmmm - I think I've found my truck for my H12-64 build!
The flanges seem to be European standard but look to be a scale 40". You may be able to turn down the flanges on a lathe.
Colin, a lot of the necessary detail parts can be found in CN SW1200RS conversion kits made by Juneco or Miniatures by Eric. To wit, the numberboard/headlight castings, the exhaust stacks, the fuel tank details, the horn and bell, and the rerailers are all included in the kit.
M636, you're not planning on modelling a Newfoundland Railways unit, are you? The Frateschi G8 and G12 are actually built to OO scale instead of HO. This is because the prototype units are typically narrow gauge and building the model to 1/76 instead of 1/87 allows the track to look proportioned.

Gentlemen, thank you for all the information so far, this will really help a lot when I go hunting on the 27th for parts.
Miguel I tried the sites you mentioned last night and both were down at that time so I'll look a little later today and see if they are up.again thanks.
Tim,I downloaded a whole raft of pictures and did note that the NAR was also one of the roads that used the Gmd 1 and if we think this one is hard, need i say the GMDH would even be worse.
M636,that's the closest I've seen so far, some other sites and threads not on here suggested sd9 trucks but they weren't the look and I think those will look a whole lot better,as for the flange problem,my friend has a lathe and then we can turn them down.
Kris,I wasn't too worried about the detail stuff right off that bat because it was kind of straight forward but thanks again for the information.
I guess the frame and the drive train will be the next hurdle and as previously mentioned a GP9 frame just may fill that portion, which would just leave the drive train issue to look at and resolve.
Again gents thanks

Fred,I sent Kaslo an email quite a while back and got a reply from them and they said they were going to put it out again,so maybe we'll have some luck this time.
Jeff what would you use to make your frame out of.
