I'm thinking of this now: other than changing the truck sideframes and filling in the sight glass on the long hood, what would it take to backdate a GP40-2 into a straight GP40?
Whaddaya think?

The cabs are different as well. One has an overhang and the other is flush front and back. Right now for the life of me I can't remember which is which. I'm sure other differences abound as well. Why not go with an Atlas GP-40 instead?

Battery box doors under the cab are different too.
I would say that by the time you finish making all the changes, if you do them, you will easily wished you had just gotten an Atlas GP40 shell kit for 20 bucks which comes with all the detail bits, and made it to fit onto the Athearn frame.
I certainly would go this route over the other. Brian

It would be easier to use an Atlas GP-40.

Miguel,
Probably was Dan Borque, and yes, he is a very good modeler. His article is probably from B$ there was a nice Atlas GP40 to work from.
Even now, I would still prefer to use an old Atlas/Roco GP40 rather than try to backdate an Athearn GP40-2 shell.

As is stated above, the best way to go is the Atlas GP40.

Hey there atsf,
The dynamic brake hatch is different on the conductor's side as well. One more thing to annoy you. Is this gonna be an ATSF model in the end or will it be something else?
so wow, I guess I shouldn't attempt this either as BN/BNSF returned all their -2s when the lease ran out. I was gonna, but now I'll just keep it a -2. Though I'll still have to swap the radiator grills to make the correct version for BN. -rats Athearn blue box waffle grilles are no bargain either.

Thanks guys for all the input. Santa Fe's lone GP40 was a one-of-a-kind for the railroad. Duplicating my efforts wouldn't be a hinderance. I was gonna make it layout quality but there are still limitations to how far to go without making it prototypical. I'm always looking for the cheapest way out. I'll stick with the Atlas shell I have and go from there.
Thanks, Dave
