Here is a Kato NW2 that I did a while ago that has spent all of its life in the display case. I thought I would dig it out and do a little touch up. The pics don't really do it justice; I've never had much luck photographing black. The top of the hood and cab are weathered much more than the sides to give it a used but maintained look.

Thats a great looking NW2. I know what you mean about photographing black. I have the same problem photographing my Penn Central engines. P

Nice engine! May spend today modelling. Love this site!
Regarding shooting on black: The problem is that the white background is causing too much contrast. Try a piece of coloured bristol board to shoot against. Black, dark blue, green would all work well.
