This is modeled after a CofG 40' 1-1/2 boxcar. It is an undec IMWX car with an extra set of doors that were cut down to 4 feet wide, new door sides, sills and guides were made from styrene. A-Line stirrups, DA cut levers, Kadee air hoses, couplers, wheelsets were used. The roof walk will be added after painting. The white styrene doesn't show details well on the door edge-the edge has a step like the original edge. I've decided that I'm going to paint and letter this one for my Trinity River & Western using some decals I had made back in '93 by Don Manlick.

Nice Work, Chuck! Are the bracketed grab irons (on the A end of the car side) part of the kit or were they aftermarket?

Thanks guys! I did get it painted today and I'm pleased with the way it is turning out. I also moved the stirrups out more toward the ends; it looks better! I'll post a pic tomorrow, perhaps with some decals on it.
Fred - I'm not sure as to the reason they made it with a 4' door, but while doing some research, I found these cars were used mainly for auto parts. Whatever the reason, I also think it is a neat prototype.
Robert - All of the ladders and grabs were part of the kit.

From what I remember about those auto parts cars, the half-door was used to accomodate loading the palletized baskets that were used to ship auto parts without changing the structural integrity of an existing box car. The cars, with the empty baskets, were reverse-routed back to the shipper for reloading. They were usually stenciled for such service and were assigned to a railroad agent at the point of origin.

Here it is all painted up- I'm happy with the way it turned out. I'm just not sure how many more I'll do...although I did place an order at the LHS yesterday for some undec IM cars. I'm not sure what the small white specks are; they are not on the model

That came out really nice!!!
Not sure what you used to light the scene but you might just be dust floating by. You might try and clean your lenses too.
Keep up the great work!!

I gotta admit that when it was pieced together, I wasn't sure it would turn out so well. I am very happy with it and have decided that I will do another and letter it for the CofG. But that will need to wait until the IM order comes in.
I am planning my next boxcar bash and will, hopefully, show some pics by the weekend.
Thanks for the kind words!

Thanks David! It looks a little out of place with all of the wood side 36 footers that I have been building, but it looks great in the display case!
I am planning one based on a MDC 36' boxcar. It should be pretty cool. The paint scheme will be the same but it will have a fish belly underframe.

Robert- Awesome car! Is that a resin kit or what? Thanks Chuck, I scratch-built that one up out of wood, using some Grandt Line and Tichy details for the underframe. The herald is my own design and it is lettered for the Gulf & Ship Island, an old southern Mississippi railroad absorbed by the ICRR in 1926. Man, those MDC 36-footers are NICE!
