Locos need freight cars to haul so this is one that I have been working on, I took one of the new Red Caboose PFE R-70-15 and brought it upto date: I cut the end of the roof out as well as several hole in the sides. As this was one of the first runs from Red Caboose, I had to remove the running boards and fill in all the associated holes. I shortened the ladders and lowered the brake wheel The car comes with an end bulkhead, however this is mounted on the floor panel, I changed this and mounted into the car body. On this bulkhead I added an A-Line Carrier modern chiller unit. I also changed the coupler pockets, using Detail Associates cushion pockets. I changed the trucks to a pair of Accurail 70ton ASF trucks with 3 springs. These are technically the same as the Red Caboose trucks, however I could now put semi-scale wheels in that have a polished steel look about them rather than blackened brass. The patches on the side are made with .005" evergreen and Archer Transfer Rivets www.archertransfers.com/www.archertransfers.com/AR88014.htmlDecals are by Microscale - MC 4403. The car represents a batch of cars that was incorrectly marked as R-70-20. Ian

This is a great model, although it is UP. I am curious about the Archer rivets. Do they have any depth to them or are they just a flat black dot? Either way great model and keep up the good work!

The Archer rivets are truly 3D. they are black resin rivet heads "printed" onto decal paper.
You apply them before painting and paint over them when you paint the car. I have tried several other methods before, however this is the only one that is viable and looks good in all light.
As you can see from the patch plates, those rivet heads are white !
The sheets are not cheap at $14.95 for a 3" x 4" sheet, however they have opened up many projects that I am now considering.
I used sheet AR88014 on this car, the new HO and N scale sheets are very interesting and I will be investing in these once my credit crunch is over !
BTW, this is the second 57ft Reefer I had bashed, the first was a BNSF WFE reefer, sorry no photos, its on loan to my LHS. No. 3 is going to be BNFE WFE.

Ian,
Thanks for the info, I have a few project cars I have wanted to do but, like you, was not really looking forward to making rivets. When you get your model back from the LHS please try and post some pics of the more respectable railroad j/k. Thanks again and I look forward to seeing more of your work!

That reefer looks great! I didnt realize the U.P. was retrofitting cars with the Carrier units. The Archer rivets are interesting. I am planning on building some N.S. Bethgons that have a line of rivets down both sides and was planning on gluing Tichy scale rivets 4 to 6 on each panel. The Archer rivets look like the solution to a task I was dreading.

Excellent job there. When I saw this post, I went to Archer's website and ordered a couple of sheets. I was wanting to do a few C&O coal hoppers that were rebuilt from offset to rib side using the Athearn kit. However, the Athearn hopper would require me to remove a couple of ribs and add four. The issue with missing rivets had me thinking of butchering another rib side for the extra ribs, but this provides an easier alternative with strip styrene. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, very nice job. I thought that was a new model, and not a kitbash. Very nicely done.

Intermountain has announced units similiar to this. They will be the R-70-20 class with new carrier units. Supposed to be out around first part of 2010.
