Well, I know I'm a newbie, but I've started a superdetailing project. It's a Bachmann 5 GP40-2 HH. It was a Norfolk Southern, numbered 6551, but it didn't have the horsehead scheme, so, very inaccurate. I still need to get Apple Barrel Red for the long hood. I plan on adding MU hoses, snow plow, all weather windows. I have the pic that I'm using for the prototype. hope that link works. Altoona & Northern is a name I came up with. I want to weather it a bit, not to much. I have to cut the bell of the long hood (that's were it is on the bachmann.) So, I'll get picks on tommorow. Also, for you freelancers, how do you print out decals for your engines?

The pic you linked to isn't a Dash 2. It's just a plain old GP-40.

Found the box, and it is a regular GP40. I may take an airtank off the bachmann, and replace it with an athearn one. Pictures later.

It's a GP50. How does the Bachman shell compare to an Athearn GP50?

It's a GP50. How does the Bachman shell compare to an Athearn GP50? Quick answer...it doesn't. The Athearn shell is actually pretty good for the "Phase I" GP50. Dimensionally correct in most respects. I believe the only issue with the Athearn is the side sills and I believe that is only on what they call the Phase II. The Athearn will run better than the Bachmann. It also has far superior side frames to the Bachmann. Biggest issue in my mind with the Athearn is the cast fuel tank.

The Athearn unit is light years ahead of the Bachman. What is it about the Athearn fuel tank that you don't like? If anything, you can sand it till it's nice and smooth and just add details.

Its just a pain to have to do all that sanding on the metal tanks. Not the easiest thing to do and keep the profile. Lately I've been milling the fuel tanks off of my Athearn chassis and replacing them with either RFMP or Athearn tanks.
