Hi,
new here with all the great information here, I can't resist but to start with a question...
Working on a rebuild of my old KMT U50C, the one area that always puzzled me is the center radiator area. Before figuring out how to make these, I'd like to get a bit of a better feel what these looked like in reality.
I have not come across a good photo about what these grilled actually looked like. The article in Streamliner 23/3 says these were common with the U33C, but I haven't seen a close enough picture of these either yet.
There is that picture of 5008 in Omaha shops '77 (Streamliner 23/3) with nearly all sheetwork removed and one of the big grilles leaned against the body - it seems a very narrow louver frame with ~30 slats, bolted to the body from the outside. Were these covered with mesh? How deep were these boxes... 3 - 4"?
Anyone has a clearer picture or anything about these louvre frames?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thank s so much!
C,-m
PS: apologies if didn't get the terminology right.

Thank you - checked them out - very nice! So there was mesh on the outside. Also the radiator core B set seems to be just the right one. Once they will be available again. Exciting!
Thanks! C,-m

flic.kr/p/23eKshXThe intakes on the sides are a mesh fabric that is formed into vertical corrugations. The same process is used today on current GE/Wabtec locomotives.
