The GM&O #950 (EMD SD40X prototype - #434) was purchased in July, 1966. It survives today at the Monticello Railway museum as ICG #6071. IIRC, the 1979 versions of this model went to the KCS.

The NW bought the SD50S, which was basically an SD50 on an SD40-2 frame. That would make it at least conceptually similar to the SD40X that went to KCS. I wonder what the differences between the two are and what the path to a model might be.
I remember seeing a model of the KCS SD40X in Tom Busack's article "Athearn's SD40-2: A Kitbasher's Goldmine" in the 80s, but it was just a photo without any instructions on how to build it.

There were two versions of the SD40X. The first versions were test beds for the SD40, built in 1964/65 on SD35 frames. The second versions were test beds for the SD50, built in 1979 on SD40-2 frames.
