I am currently thinking about getting myself an RSD-5 in a while, but it seems the only plastic option is the old Atlas one. I am thinking of getting one on Ebay for cheap, but Atlas is apparently making them for their Classic series. Is their any difference between the old one and the new run?

The newer ones have a little thinner handrails, led lighting, coupler boxes help hold the shell on, etc. Other than those small updates, the body tooling is virtually the same between the two except for the addition of individually applied grab irons on the new one. If you don't want to spend a small fortune, the older "yellow box" Atlas are still a good starting point, and the Kato mechanisms are fantastic with DCC.

What lighting does the old one have? Also, is the mechanism any good?

What lighting does the old one have? Also, is the mechanism any good? It has just standard incandescent bulbs, if you're doing DCC it's worth it to upgrade to LED's anyway. The older "yellow box" Atlas engines have a Kato drive, very durable and smooth running, and work fantastic with DCC conversions.

Unfortunately, you’d be around 3 scale feet short and you’d need to cut up the long hood and reposition the air filters, but then again, I might be a river counter. Also, isn’t this what Atlas did with their original rsd-12 run?

Hi guys-been throwing that RSD12 bash around awhile.Must have done the dimensions a dozen times. If I recall, the scale difference was 4 mm;whatever the full size addition was.It starts at the seam on the long hood end.The filters close to the cab are a pair grouped together as on some RS10/RS18. Actually, the RSD-12 was only 13 inches longer than the RS-11, the biggest discrepancy between the two is the location of the forward two long hood vents. I'm doing a pair of N&W units which had no dynamic brakes, and lacked the two forward vents anyway.
