Looking for imformation on the hatch placed on the hood od EMD/GGMD SW series switchers. The one right in front of the cab on the sloped section. No two manufactures seem to have the same style or size of hatch. Photos, looking down are pretty well non existant. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

Uh, I probably should have asked which sw units you are interested in. Those links I just posted all have to do with the sw1000/1500 and kinda mp15dc/mp15ac hoods. If you are talking about units up through the 1200, then my info probably won't directly apply.

Hmm, can't get the first link to load properly. Soooooo..... Edit: How strange, the actual link won't even load in this post. It's pasted in, I can see it when I go back to edit the post, but it will not show up once I save changes. Sooooo..... The gallery is on RRPicturesArchive.net, the photographer is Sam Davey, search his photos by model and go to the sw1500 page.

The link to Jim Griffin's Flickr gallery is incorrect- it takes you to Rob Sarberenyi's Pbase gallery...

And so it does. Man I had some problems there. Fixed the link in the original post. Thanks for letting me know.
With regard to the hatch version on the sw9-sw1200, regrettably I don't have any knowledge or information specific to the earlier switchers. I will however see what I can find and see if things match up with the sw1000/sw1500 hatch to any extent. I will report back if I find something worthwhile.

This is what I've found so far regarding the earlier switcher hatch. The first photo is from the Kalmbach cyclopedia. The latter is a screen capture from this video on youtube. I went through about 25 pages of sw1200 photos on RRPA.net without finding anything better. I don't have a direct spec on the sheet metal thickness, but it's in the range of 1/8" to 1/4" thick. The bolts on the sw1500 are 3/8" hex heads with appropriate lock washers. I would be surprised if the earlier units were much different. Based on the Kalmbach drawing pulled into cad, the hatch size is ~58" x ~30". The Kalmbach drawing would appear to have the hatch too close to the cab front, and too far from the joint between the sloped roof and the hatches over the prime mover, as compared to photos. I will be going to a train show in Cleveland this coming weekend. On the way back, I can stop at the Mad River Museum in Bellevue. They have one of the earlier switchers there. If I can find somebody to talk to about permission to measure the hatch, I'll get some specifics. Beyond that, unless a photo is found in the meantime, I can get measurements at IRM the next time I'm there. Jim

I swung by the Mad River Museum in Bellevue yesterday afternoon. I found some shop guys who said "go for it" when I explained what I needed to check, which was cool. However, the excitement was short lived, as the switcher they have on site is an nw2. It doesn't have the same hood design as the sw8/9/1200, so no hatch to measure. Bummer.
I'll almost certainly be at IRM in March, maybe sooner. If so, I can try again at that time. I know they have lots of examples of the units in question, from which to choose.
