From Photobucket, I copy and paste the direct link using the "Insert Image" button as opposed to the IMG link. I never had any luck with the IMG link either.

Pictures don't show up for me.
Regarding the cab. I'd say if your going thru the trouble of the Cannon nose you might as well do the cab and sub base as well. Its not that much more work considering your already cutting parts off (it might actually make your cuts easier). I've done the Cannon cab/sub base/nose on a few Milwaukee Road SD40-2's and they look much better than the Athearn cab.

Put together the dynamic and radiator fans today. There was a lot of flash on the base and one of them broke when I cut it off the tree. Managed to do some repair work on it. All 5 fans complete and ready for painting.

Hey, when you start messing with the really fragile parts - are you using a sprue nipper to cut them from the tree? If not, suggest you pick up a set from either micro-mark, or one of the tool guys selling tools at train shows. They have them, and they work, and I find them easy to sharpen if they dull. Use them only on plastic parts being cut from the sprue - worth their price, as they don't put undue stress on the parts when cutting them off like using a knife or straight edge does. Note: extremely awesome sprue nippers are made by PBL - but they cost $$, but if you value tools - again - worth the $$.
Also - when something like breakage occurs - or - you need to clean up some flash - spend a few minutes figuring out a good way to hold/support the part, so it doesn't take on damage as you sand/file/scrape.
With the Cannon fans rings, they are pretty thin to begin with, and it doesn't take much to wreak havoc on them in short order. I looked around, and found that an old ink pen (a tapered fat one) was the ticket, as I could slide the ring onto the pen, and the body of the pen supported the ring, allowing me to clean up the parts easily without distorting the shape or breaking them.
Hope this helps! Brian

I've done the Cannon cab/sub base/nose on a few Milwaukee Road SD40-2's and they look much better than the Athearn cab. If you decide to remove the cab/-with Cannon parts - look for a thread Bob Harpe did on building a SOUTHERN GP50. There, he describes a jig he made simply from a block of wood and a hack saw to cut a couple grooves into the block to support the shell while doing the dirty work of removing the unwanted pieces - it will stabilize the shell, and help keep it straight/unbroken. Regards, Brian

Brian, i do have spru cutter. Was just to lazy to take them out of the drawer. 😀. I learned my lesson though. I think I might just use the Cannon 88" nose a keep the stock cab on this project. The wife kinda destroyed the budget for a couple of months at IKEA. I will search for the Bob Harpe thread though. Thanks for the tips.

Ive done that too Mike, a few too many times. I also recently dropped and cracked a bottle of plastruct on our new wood floors! Wife wasnt too happy with that. Ya think I would have learned by now to take my time and get all the tools.........but I apparently havent.
Looking good so far on the build, keep posting those updates.

Finally put together the Cannon Cab and 88" nose. I haven't glued them to the shell yet. Still have to drill out the grab iron holes.
