I have left aside some projects so to get this little one completed first. After spending all winter working on the layout, I am back to diesels detailing again, and I am doing this easier one to get back to my comfort zone. It is basically a Overland brass shell that I have modified underneath so it fits over an Athean Genesis GP-38 frame and drivetrain. I am using the same decoder and will simply connect all LEDs and strobes to F5 and F6 functions. The plan was to remove the middle top fan, then relocate the horn, add a grab iron, antenna and beacons supports to the cab. Minor soldering project. I also already soldered the MU hoses (made out of decoder wires), then glued ditch lights after a drilling session in preparation to wire all LEDs. Here's where I am at so far: (thanks to Gary Harris for the day picture) Project: Cab original state: Yes, here are a few pending projects, keeping me busy for a couple months: Details and paint (decals uncomplete). I just completed the cab paint. It is way too shiny but it will have the Dullcote session once all decals are added, then make some light weathering. CP units I witness around Montreal are pretty neat and not heavily stained, so I will keep the cab sides shiny, but fade the roof and add light smoke weathering. Looking forward to see other projects too. Seems like the forum is running slow nowadays... Stephane

That's one cool prototype conversion. From hot rod 4 axle to simple non turbo road switcher. That sucker even has a PAF box hacked into the dynamics. Stephane, there's more than likely a set of exhaust ports or stacks, one on either side of the dynamic fan also. Great choice for a model as well. The CP red looks good on those.

Got pictures of the exhaust stacks location? It is still time to make correctives. The stainy black weathering will hide the modification. S.

Oh, now I see what you mean. They are identical to those found on GP9s as well. Geez, I almost missed that!!
They are showing in one of my pictures bank, but all black so just barely noticeable.
OK, I do have some brass Tenshodo ones somewhere in my spare parts (from my CN 274 slug project). I will brush the paint locally, then glue them over so I don't ruin the paint job.
Mucho gracias for that observation.

I'm not positive- but I think the model is a late GP40-2, which is turbo charged, and the hatch ahead of the db is the exhaust stack/silencer.
If so, then there would not be exhaust stacks in front/behind the db fan.

I'm pretty sure this is an ex UP unit? Maybe? But it's definitely a GP40X 3500 hp 645f engine that has been now rebuilt & de-turbocharged. The good news is it's an easy conversion. Even the PAF box is standard EMD size. Just add the cannon part and some exhaust stacks and its complete. Adding the Paper Air Filter will really give this model the 38 look. That gets rid of the flat turbo silencer hatch.

Sounds like a plan. All I'll do is kitbash a PAF box and I found some nice brass exhaust stacks that I can easily add on.. Can you by chance identify the center part over the cabin in this picture (look like a huge nail head)? www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1368453Stephane

Stephane, for the PAF box you want to get the Cannon & Co. part: FB-1901. It's the correct angled air filter and it's a very nice kit. The dimensions are probably listed on the back of the kit. Find the PAF boxes width and cut it out of the shell. The dynamic blister will stub end into the PAF box like in the proto pics so you'll need a couple small pieces of styrene to close up the dynamic ends. You'll see all of this when you cut out the necessary opening for the PAF box and mount it. The nail head on top of the cab looks like a filter just like the one mounted on the engineers side of the nose in the same pic.

The biggest spotting feature is the flared radiators, reminiscent of the flared radiators on the SD45. The GP40X was a test bed for the later-produced GP50, and was owned by AT&SF, SOU, SP, and UP. Conversion to GP38-2 specs includes removing the turbo exhaust stack and adding the two smaller non-turbo stacks. More information on the UP locos, including retirement and rebuilding dates, can be found here: utahrails.net/up-diesel-roster/up-diesel-roster-15.php#gp40x-954Glenn Leasure

Stephane-nice work on that beauty.Should be a one-of-a kind when you're done. That nail piece I believe is a pop-up cab vent. Anthony

Thanks to all of you for all relevant information. I sure will take the time to add those modifications as soon as I have time. I may take a slightly different route for the PAF box. Plastic ain't much my thing for locos (unless the last available option), even if I am used to it for layout structures.

Recent works on the PAF box and exhaust stacks. Well that was one heck of a surgery. I felt my heart shrinking in my chest as I had the Dremel 1/16" disc cutting through the nice AJIN cab (notice the heart shaped water drop on the table, from cooling the hot iron block!!! That was incidental and maybe a sign... I sure will love that loco.). I really dislike having to do such a thing, but it had to be done so to match the prototype. I took the opportunity to relocate the horn and add supplemental weight in the cab, so it also helps securing the box. I machined the PAF box into a solid piece of iron. It was an obvious choice to me. Iron= added weight/no need buying additionnal parts/doing without plastic. Here is the partial result. Next steps to completion will be completing the decals and paint (black, then weathering), connecting all wires, shaping the strobe lights, and add the glass. Cool, thanks. It is currently under a friend's good hands for the wire job. I purchased an Econami decoder with EMD prime movers, but unfortunaltely, it doesn't has the 645 non-turbo. I will end up having a 645 turbo sound until I figure out a better option. Due to the many functions it will have (thanks to these new Econami decoders featuring many) I had to replace the stock Genesis Tsunami card. Still, It will be a cool machine with no less than 14 LED on it. One heck of wire job under the cab. It shall look like the first prototype picture above. Stephane

I am almost done with this project. Just completed the decals, added micro magnets (PWRS hoses system) PWRSlinkAll it needs now is the under frame weathering, and reassembling the couplers. Body clear coat is drying now. Pictures to come this week, hopefully made outside... Stephane

This project has been completed long ago, but I will post a YouTube link of this unit in operation in the next few hours. It has Athearn Genesis drivetrain and chassis and AJIN brass body, plus several brass modifications. I initially toasted the Tsunami Decoder and replaced by a QSI LockSound one (set as GP38 as the prototype) which sounds awesome. She is my favorite switcher to date, but I will have more projects going on this winter. Stay tuned Stephane
