I want to model Detroit, Toledo, and Ironton GP38AC #219 using Atlas GP38 #201. What external difference is there other than the nose bell?

GP38AC's were mostly built in '71 right before the dash 2's came. There are exceptions to the rules but stiffener ribs on the blower hump is a common detail for AC's and most '71 built EMD's. It's really internals that are the major differences.

There was a thead about a GP38ac, and someone mentioned that the handrail uprights were spaced differently. I don't know for sure, but look back at some GP38ac projects to see if my recollection was correct. Maybe a site with the CAD locomotive drawings would help.

If you are using the Atlas #201 Model as a starting point, besides the items already mentioned, there is no Dynamic Brake on the DT&I GP38AC's and the dust bin needs to be replaced with a Paper Air Filter. In addition there are two grabs that need to be installed on each side of the front sand filler, and the engineers side has a 3 window All Weather window while the fireman's side retains the normal sunshade, also spark arresters over the exhausts.

You're probably going to have a challenge with removing the Dyn brake because the DT&I logo is higher on the hood than 201 was.
You're probably best to start with an undec, or model 200 to 204. 205 and 206 have the gong bell in the nose and dyn brakes, but even they don't match the exact location of the DT&I on the hood to the atlas model of 201.
BTW Matt, did you ever do anything with that custom NW SD40 I sold you?
