As I'm working on my TR4 set and was cleaning up the side sills and those horrible mounting holes Athearn put on for the handrails I started thinking about what I was going to do for handrails on the finished model. Needless to say the Athearn ones aren't going back in since they didn't even get the stanchion counts right. What options are there for handrails though?
I tried contacting Walthers to see if they have any for purchase from the SW7 Proto run and never heard back. I'm guessing I'll have to bend my own but what stanchions are correct? Are there any other options for plastic ones? I'm not a huge fan of bending my own but I'll do it if I have to.

Depending when your prototype was built, and I suspect the TR4s had the hood rails, most RRs retrofitted deck railing later in life, and some RRs used whatever they wanted/had. Some used EMD stanchions, some used just angle iron, spacing all over the map...you get the idea.
I suspect your stanchions are GP7 style pipe stanchions which are available from precision scale. PS also makes full SW ends in brass, although the railings are way too thick, the stanchions look nice. (but have to be drilled for railings...yuck)
I apologize, I'm at work right now and not looking at a MILW TR4 photo to see what you're up against.

Thanks Sean. Yeah I think it'll be a mix of standard EMD and home built. The Milwaukee didn't put full side railings on the TR4's so whatever they came from the factory with works for just about all of it. They did rebuild the ends of the 'B' unit to include a ladder type step on each side, so those railings were modified.
Using a GP7 style would make sense, especially for me since the Milwaukee had so many of them. I'll have to look at the Precision Scale ones, might be a good starting point if nothing else.

I was looking thru the catalog for Precision Scale at work (couldnt focus on more important things). I didnt see the SW handrail set anywhere. i didnt really even see any handrails that looked to match the SW series. Did I miss something?

Here's the steps: Here's the stanchions, not sure which length you need...
