Just thought I'd start laying out ideas on my new project, an HO scale layout of my representation of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
It started out with a modified version of the Mineral Range and Lake Michigan trackplan as detailed in Model Railroader. I changed names to reflect the real world and eventually I completely changed the design to better reflect what fits the needs better.
There are 3 freelanced railroads that make up the layout, 2 based out of Escanaba and the other is a shortline owned by a mine near Bessemer that interchanges with one of the others.
The Gogebic Range & Lake Michigan runs from a dock at Escanaba to a CN interchange at Ironwood. It's main yard is just west of Escanaba at Schaffer where it also interchanges with the real world Escanaba & Lake Superior. There's 4 iron mines along the line, all served with balloon loops with 3 producing taconite and the third producing raw iron for export via my Washington Railroad via Seattle.
The GR&LM also interchanges ore trains with the modern SPSF and Mopac to serve steel mills further south of lake country.
The Escanaba Northern is a shortline running from Escanaba to Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. The roster is all ALCos and MLWs. The line is the former Mineral Range & Lake Michigan line (a nod to where this all started). Most commodities are timber, coal to a power plant in Gulliver, bridging intermodal trains from CN and my Washington Railroad. The EN hauls ore trains north to Algoma Steel and trains of slab steel and coils south.
Third up is the Gogebic Bessemer, a small railroad running from Ironwood to Bessemer. It is owned by a mine near Bessemer and hauls trains from a interchange yard in Ironwood to the mine and return. GR&LM then hauls the loads to Escanaba for unloading at the dock. It owns 5 GEs, 2 U25Cs and 3 U30Cs and the livery will be a blatant rip off of the Kaiser Steel Eagle Mountain Railroad.
I'll add more as I've got more to show but I have a couple projects lined up:
GR&LM SD80MACs
WRR SD49s and SD55s
EN C636s and C430s
GB U25Cs and U30Cs
