Gents... So there's an older fella in the small town that my parent's live in that decided to get out of the hobby. He was never into it very deep, but he did have a sizeable collection of Roco HOn2.5 mining models, and the typical Mantua and Varney steam. He dropped off an AB set of Alco models Sharks with the express condition that my dad could have them if he would paint them and run them on dad's layout for him to enjoy. So, I've always liked the RF-16 sharks, especially in NYC cigar band scheme, and even the Monongahela ones. They weren't pretty boy F's assigned to crack passenger trains, but rather suited to lugging ore and coal trains. Their Baldwin-only MU capabilities meant they usually didn't stray or cross pollinate too often with other units. So I did some research and the more I looked, the more I liked! They got dirrrtay, and just plain beat up in the late 60s when they were past off to the Monongahela where they mustered on for a few more years. I liked them so much, I picked up a dummy model power A unit to finish off the ABA set for $15. The MP is more accurate than the Alco models version, mostly in the nose area. Roco patterned the frame for the RF-16 and incorrectly shared it with the FA1. It really is an excellent representation of the RF in plastic, and very accurate. So I need to pickup a few more decals (the Microscale set will only do a pair of RFs) to do all 3. They don't need much for detailing, maybe some close coupling and some single chimes and wire grabs on the MP plastic one. Cheers!

Sean~
Not to be too much of a wise guy here, but would these be considered "The Velveteen Sharks"?

I know eh. Summer is a slow time for me on the modeling front. I have one set of NYC decals for the velveteen sharks, and will probably pick up another set at the Woodstock train show this weekend, and with flurries in next week's forecast, I'll probably start to migrate to the hobby room again to sift through all the projects.

Small gains.... I'm pretty uninspired by these 2 brass models. They are OOB, no frills KMT Alco models brass. I squirted on some TLT warm black and added some NYC decals. This is as far as I'm going to go with these 2 coffee grinders. The Model Power shark is still on the bench. I shaved off the moulded on railings and filled in some of the mould parting lines. I'm also going to have to make some custom Monongahela decals as I don't think anybody makes them for the sharks...

The KMTs are THAT bad??? Coffee Grinders!!?? Wow... it's been SO long since I've owned one, I forgot! I had a Alco Models Trainmaster, back in the 70's... and I thought it was pretty smooth. Of course, that may have been the memory of a 14 year old kid!! ~ Carmine

The sharks are one of the first models that KMT/Alco models ever released. They have pittman motors mounted right over the back truck and have the thru tank drive ala hobbytown.
The nose is also too long and is closer to a 6 axle shark in length than a RF16.
I just did them up for that older friend of my dad's to enjoy.
Carmine, I think your Trainmaster might have been an old Red Ball TM.

Sean.... You may be right. It was a LONG time ago! I remember those old Hobbytown drives. I actually remember as a kid, thinking something like, There's GOT to be a better way than THIS! I got one for an AHM RS-something - and after this then 12 year old installed the mess, thought the crappy AHM 3-pole, single truck drive was actually quieter! They were somewhat of an improvement from the single truck drive, but NOT in smoothness.

Actually, the Hobbytown RS3 is not all that bad. I have one started as a CR (exEL) RS3 and with a good can motor in it becomes an awesome switch engine with the massive flywheel that occupies most of the cab. My dad has a CP one on his layout and its my favourite switching engine because it will pull "the ears off a Gundar" (to quote Han Solo) and the flywheel makes it a bit tougher to handle than a regular unit. I also like Cary units with the Ernst gearing...I'm a bit old skool that way... The KMT sharks could be upgraded (I was looking at them last night) by removing the pittman and mounting a can to the frame and using a piece of surgical tube to line up the drive shaft. I could also sneak the front truck of the A unit fwd to help the buck tooth overbite the unit has, but like I said, as soon as I go visit my parents over the holidays, these grinders get plopped down on the layout to earn their keep. (or become hangar queens if they're not up to the task)

My Hobbytown drive had a Pittman motor (talk about old school). It HAD pulling power... but slow speed smoothness, notsomuch.
I can't believe what those drives go for now!!
