Got an awesome deal on a couple of Athearn RTR P42DCs the other day. They're the original RTR release, but, nevertheless, still in good condition and at $40 each, why not?! Same time, same place, I also got an awesome deal on five superliner cars. So, I've been waiting years to do an Amtrak setup, and now's the time, I suppose.
Just today, I walked into another train store and found TONS of Superliner cars. Bought those, too. 8 for $120 in Ph IV. Bought the DW P40/42 detail kit and a few extra parts and will start work on them when i eventually get home, again. Throw in a LokSound Select and some lights, then I'm all set! Hope to have them running by April on the SD Layout. We'll see! Maybe I'll start a write-up, seeing how there isn't one here.

Well, work has begun on the P42s. I'm adding Details West's AM-271 detail kit to one of the units, now. For those of you who are wondering what a good paint match for the Athearn Amtrak Pantone blue is, I've found that the old Testors Sea Blue is a really close match. When a bit of weathering is applied, it actually blends right in and would take a highly trained eye to tell the difference. As for the gray chassis, Badger Model Flex Grimy black matches pretty well, with the exception that it is slightly darker. Again, a bit of weathering, and everything blends quite well.
Unfortunately, when I installed the LokSound decoder into one of the locos, it decided to quit on me out of nowhere. I installed four 0402 SMDs and that was it. I mean, c'mon, but it should take 60mA at the least... not happy with that decoder as of now. So, it's on its way back to Caboose Hobbies for a repair or exchange. Good luck getting a hold of anyone at ESU state side.
Pics and new thread to come.
Stay tuned!
