been staring at my lightweight GP for a while now, and it needs to get completed, does anyone have dimensions and or the bend angles for the handrails on the step ends, I know they bend inwards, and up, then back. The new athern units have them, but I m not close enough to a new one to measure it.

Only one of the new AThearn units has the proper handrails, the others are foobies. (GP7 stanchions, with GP9 bent railings) They're pretty easy to bend as long as you can 'visualize' what CN was trying to accomplish. I'll see if I can get some better pics and a diagram to show the best way to bend them...

from what I remember, they were designed to make it easier when climbing up, following the end rail, and then the upper portion was kind of safety measure so you wouldn't walk right off the end, and into the step well, if I can get the measurements-ish, I'll make myself a jig so everything will match, let me know what you find, thanks !

Actually thats right (and I'm glad they're done this way) its to prevent slip and falls on the deck from going down the steps onto the ground. I did the splits on ice once, exiting the cab and the railing deflected me onto the front landing instead of down the steps. whew! The railing was right in front of me to grab onto the whole time. If it had've been the GP7 style railing, grabbing onto it would have swung me into the steps, sliding down it to the ground.

I just kind of eye-balled mine to match the angles on the front handrails .... Mark.

It wasn't just a CN thing, GMD built other units with those kinked handrails for CP (every GP9 starting from 8618 up) and a few other buyers including Cartier (GEXR's).
