U25C
Dates Built: Sept. 1963 to Dec. 1965
Number Built: 113
The U25C was General Electric's first six axle road switcher for the U.S. market.
Except for minor changes, the U25C was essentially a stretched six axle U25B. The unit retained the same basic car-body appearence except for a shortened nose. The trucks applied were an improved, heavier version of the ALCo tri-mount.
Here is a breakdown of the phases.
Phase I: a: Air tanks located at each end of the fuel tank.
b: Louvers on doors under the right side of cab.
c: Plain hood doors behind cab.
Built Dates: Sept. 1963 to May 1964
Number Built: 11 (Oro Dam #8010-8016)
(ACL #3000-3003)
Phase II: a: Air tanks relocated into car-body to accommodate a larger fuel tank. An increase from 2,900 to 3,500 gallons.
b: Louvers removed from doors under the right side of cab.
c: Louvers added to the hood doors in the area behind cab. This is the area where the air tanks were relocated to.
Built Dates: May 1964 to Nov. 1964
Number Built: 24 (NP #2500-2514)
(LS&I #2500-2501)
(ACL #3004-3010)
phase IIIa: a: Large screened opening added to roof top behind cab.
b: Screened openings added to hood sides, replaces louvered hood doors.
c: Louvers added to door ahead of right-side screen.
Built Dates: April 1965
Number Built: 10 (PRR #6500-6509)
phase IIIb: a: Screened openings on hood sides replaced by two-piece screened doors.
b: Louvers on right side moved to left side of hood.
Built Dates: May 1965 to Dec. 1965
Number Built: 68 (NP #2515-2529)
(L&N #1500-1517)
(CB&Q #550-561)
(ACL #3011-3020)
(PRR #6510-6519)
(Oro Dam #8017-8019)
Note: All PRR and L&N units #1500-1517 had extended range dynamic brakes applied. This can be identified by the longer box at the rear of the walkway. Which required three handrails stanchions instead of the normal two and with the ladder being half length.
