Hey im looking for help on adding LED's to my Athearn RTR locos. They are DC and was curious if there was a way to wire them up to the RTR lighting board? If so what resistors and so on do I need and I would like to keep the directional lighting to if possible.

The Athearn board uses regulation to provide the 1.5 volts required for their bulbs. This is not sufficient to use with LEDs. If you are good at modifying surface mount components on a circuit board, you could by-pass the regulation part which would give you directional 12 volts. Then just add a 220 to 380 ohm resistor in series with each of your LEDs.
A simpler approach (and what I do) is to replace the board altogether with a DCC Ready board from an Atlas engine. They are made for using LEDs and would be directional.

Are all atlas dcc ready boards like that?
Doing an atlas classic gp7 with an esu loksound and wondered about them

All the Atlas engines after the original yellow box versions would be like that. Atlas attaches the resistors to the LEDs themselves, so the board itself outputs the full voltage. You will need to add your own resistors to your LEDs.

Ok because the atlas classics must be different
These do not use leds and I tried a test led and it popped but no biggie.. I was curious what boards and although it is a dcc ready board it's a pretty basic light board with 8 pin plug..

All the Atlas Classis engines that I've seen were all LEDs. (?) What engine are you referring to that still had bulbs ?

My atlas atsf gp7 #2672 has bulbs kinda like the p2k's..
My atlas master frisco gp38-2 had bulbs as well
Now my atlas fairbanks silver series had leds
Sure atlas didn't do hit and miss on certain engine models??
It's all good I was planning and half expected to add resistors since I added 6 leds and it was gonna be bright without one..

Some Atlas Classics (released in more recent years) have LEDs, older ones don't. My RS3 and C424 purchased in 2002 and 2004 have incandescent bulbs, my 2008-purchased C424 has LEDs.

As is the RS-3 I've been working on for a friend. Dan, my C424's were the two first "real" locomotives I bought when I first really got into the hobby about five years ago or so. I believe they were the second run.
