The N&W after they took over the Wabash sold the Panel Side Hoppers that "The Andersons" used to ship grain between their elevators in Maumee, OH to the export elevators in Toledo, OH. After the sale "The Andersons" added an extension on top of the car and a canvas cover to protect the grain from the elements. The extension allowed the car to haul it's maximum weight versus the cubic capacity. Although the instructions called for silver paint, I remember these cars passing behind my house in Toledo and they were definately green. I used Model Master Aluminum Enamel paint with a few drops of MM Green to just tint the Aluminum Paint; car was lettered with the Tichy (F&C) Decals that came with the Tichy Kit. (Just 9 more of these puppies to build now.) Rick J

Most open top loads have i uniform shape after traveling a fair distance. Do covered loads do the same thing?

I would think to a lesser extent. The uniform shape is likely caused from the wind blowing the product around, eventually creating that uniform shape that's more aerodynamic. That wouldn't happen as much with a covered load since the canvas top prevents the wind form blowing the product around as much. Hence the "lumpy" look.

The trip from Maumee to Toledo is only about 10 to 12 miles, at a relatively slow speed so there would not be any movement of the grain in the load, especially with the cover placed over the load. On the model the body extension and the cover is a one piece casting by F&C that is included with the Panel Side Tichy Hopper Kit.

Did those cars just hangout in Ohio or did they go everywhere?

Did those cars just hangout in Ohio or did they go everywhere? Dale, Not only did they just hang out in Ohio, they only went from Maumee to Toledo on the old NKP/Wabash Joint Line. Rick J
