Finally got my hands on one of those nifty Kaslo kits! Now many of you guys have already built these so this will be nothing new. So this thread is basically just somewhere to post my questions, and to share a few pics if anyone is interested.
My first question is about dcc and sound (which I know is 437 steps ahead). Now I plan on using a p2k chassis (gp7/9/18... who knows!) What decoder best represents the emd 567, and that is user friendly to install? Thanks in advance!
Progress so far includes attaching front and rear pilots, dynamic brake blisters, and battery boxes.

The casting looks really nice.
What's your assessment?

For cn fans, it really doesn't get any better then this for gp9's. They are so unique compared to other roads. As for the product, once the tedious job of cleaning the excess resin off the parts is done, it really seems easy and everything fits very well together so far. The details are phenomenal. Kaslo really did a great job.
Now I can only go so far until I get a few more parts (cannon fans, DA ladder grab irons, DW step lights... to name a few), but so far it has been fun putting it together!

I'll second that assessment of the GP9RM. I have 3 kits underway right now and they are going together very well. Also working a slug to match.
Regarding the question of sound, it's a bit of a tricky one. When CN rebuilt these, they replaced the power packs with 645 assemblies. From what I've read this has altered the sound of the prime mover. To the best of my knowledge there isn't a match in any factory sound chip.

I also had a question stemming from my build for the CN experts here. For things like grab irons, is the correct color white, or does CN use their gray paint that are used on the Sergeant stripes?

You Canadian modelers really have some neat prototypes you can build! Gotta say I'm jealous!

CN Grey #11 until after CN and IC merged. Once CN units started getting painted in the US, then the standard disappeared and anything goes. Alot of repaints didn't get the grabirons painted at all, they were just 'hoser' orange. In the early 1961 scheme, some units got black grabs.

Thanks for the info Sean, the photo pics I'm looking at have the gray grabs typically.

I've been listening to sound clips on youtube, and they just don't sound right. I guess i'll have to settle for the 645. I have a Athearn rtr sw1500 (cn/wc 1571) that I want to install dcc and sound as well, so I was hoping to order them together.

Sean, I remember you saying on here somewhere about modding the truck sideframes for these, but now I can't seem to find it. Where did you get them and do you have any pics of the mods? If I remember correctly you said they added the dash 2 style brake rigging...

That depends on which unit you build. The early units had 4 shoes per truck, but CN eventually realized that wasn't necessary due to the fact the RMs were settling into yard duties as much as road duties. Near I can tell, this mod disappeared on GR-418e and newer. GS-418, GY-418s had the full 8 shoe rigging. The sideframes I used were from the Proto BL2. Incorrect for the BL2, but closest for the old style blomberg with new style rigging.

I plan on doing either 4136 or 4139. Can't decide which one! Both are GR-418f 's I believe.
Reasons for choosing those units: 4139 was the first unit I ever worked with, and 4136 seems to be the regular L595 Huntsville switcher. It has no real significance to me personally, just interesting that they always seem to send that unit there. Only leaving for its inspections, or so it seems.

You'd be fine with standard blombergs for 4136 and 4139, no need to track down BL2 sideframes.
My first 'ride' was 7272 at mac yard. My last 'ride' was the first widecab, 4760.

Funny how we remember these things
So here is another question. Since these goats were rebuilt with 645's, would the decoder from rapido's new gmd-1 work (if I could get my hands on one)?
Now dcc and decoders and flux capacitors are new to me, this is why I ask. If you ask me about diesel engines, or how many penalty minutes Tie Domi had back in '97-'98, I can help
Its late, I should go to bed. Btw the answer is 365!

You can get your hands on a GMD-1 decoder by buying one, Rapido is offering them separately. List price is $109.95. The only question is did Rapido make a new sound file for the rebuilt GMD-1. Anyone know? If they did, I may need a few.

I thought GMD1s only had 12 vs the 16 cylinders in a GP9? A leaf fan? For shame...

Sean, you are correct regarding the number of cylinders. Also from a little internet digging this morning it seems the sound file was recorded from the 1118, which does not have the 645 power packs from what I could find. So I'd think this idea is kinda dead in the water.

And you are most certainly right. I took the Rapido GMD-1 master class last night, and am now a lot more informed lol
So on to the next idea...

Thanks for your help guys. So what's the general consensus on sound for these then? Tsunami? Loksound? And will they work with a p2k unit?
