Here is the caboose that I started on over the weekend. I originally built it to fit a caboose frame that i had, but then decided to go ahead and build it all. The only problem with me doing that is the body is a couple feet too short. At least this way, the trucks are under the ends like they should be. I can live with the 2 feet difference! It's built using .030 styrene with misc strips of various sizes. Like all of my rolling stock, it rides on Accurail trucks with Kadee wheel sets. I'll post more photos as I go.

Excellent beginning, Chuck! The two foot difference doesn't show at this point ;D

Thanks ya'll! Last night after I took the photo, I cut and filed on the end beams and added a styrene platform for the couplers. I also added the brake hose brackets. The couplers and trucks were then mounted after I drilled and tapped the 2-56 holes. Tonight, I will begin working on the underframe details. I will also begin the step assembly. These look like a total pain to do.
Up next for the weekend: Drilling holes and bending grab irons from brass. And then, the thing that I have ALWAYS hated doing, the dreaded handrails!
Hopefully, if all goes as planned, I can get a coat of paint on it too!

Here is the finished underframe. Everything, except the tank and valve, is built from styrene and grass wire. I also used Grandt Line NBW castings. It may not be totally correct, but I could not find a photo or drawing of the underframe to one of these. But, I'm happy with it. Next are the dreaded handrails!

Excellent work, Chuck!! I can't feature handrails being a problem for you now.

Awesome work Chuck, I don't think the missing two feet will even be noticed

Yeah, I agree about the 2 feet. Last night I drilled all of the holes for the grabs on the sides and the ends. Tonight, I should have the time to bend them and install them and work on the end railings. I'm pretty happy with the way it's coming along.
Fun; fun!!

Last night I was able to get the side and end grabs bent and installed. This weekend will be handrail time along with building window frames. I'll post another pic when I get more done.

It's been a while since I've updated this post, so here is a pic of the 'boose in it's current state. I still need to do the end railings and ladders, steps, and cupola windows and frames, and of course, light weathering.

looks pretty crummy...sorry bad play on words. It looks like your having a lot of fun with this build. It sure is noce when you are coming down the home stretch on a project. Out of curiosity, is this based of of a specific prototype or are you just winging it? Either way its a neat little build!!!

Greg - I am following a prototype for the most part. Since I ended up making it a couple of feet short, I am using a little modeler's license for some of it. I think it has the feel of the prototype and, sometimes, that's good enough for me!
