Here is a pair of GN boxcars I completed a while back that are sitting on the siding at No. Powder on the Mt Hood Model Engineers layout.
The puppy on the left is an Intermountain car assembled from an undec kit. The green paint is Floquil and the decals are from Champ. The humperdill on the right is an Athearn 50' double door puppy that was modified to accept a Front Range plug door. I really like creating various cars that aren't available and this one wasn't at the time. She is painted with Floquil's caboose red and Champ decals applied. I surely do miss Champ. Although they are not a prototype fit of GN's combo boxcar, it is close enough for me and I figure most modelers.

Close enough fills a lot of freight car rosters. They look nice and if they fill your needs, they're even better. By the way, I miss Champ as well.

What's the reason for the two different types of doors? Have a few of those so would like to know what industries these cars were meant for.

Andy, I have seen them used for newsprint paper loading. With both doors open, the fork lifts have a better access to load and unload and can be spotted at almost any type of dock or warehouse door. BTW, Don, nice work, those turned out Great.

Thanks fer the nice comments gents. Andy, those are 50' combination door boxcars. They provided extra flat space in the car for loads, which mostly consisted of dimensional lumber and plywood, and, as Andy stated, they helped forklifts gain easier access with both doors open.

Not sure if they are both the same prototype, I think the green car is PS, and the red ACF, but if they are, you can see the advances in model making are quite obvious!
Looks good!

Those look nice and if you hadn't said I'd have assumed they were factory painted!

These GN cars are actually quite unique in that most railroads that had combination door usually had a 6' Plug Door and either an 8',9' or 10' Slider. The prototype GN cars had 8' Plugs and a 6' Slider. A GN Modeling site suggested using a Branchline Single door car and making a larger door opening for the two doors, I went with a double door Front Range car and filled in a couple of feet to make the 14' Door Opening. Finished car painted with a mixture of Floquil Jade Green and BN Green, then lettered with a Microscale Set developped for this car. Rick J
