Hello gents. Once again been away for awhile and not getting much on the bench done. Then had to pack everything up, and now finally back into the swing of things with a simple and easy detailing, Conrail GP35 #2269. I got this unit thru evilbay at quite a steal (Bachmann DCC On Board units are quite cheap there), and thought I'd try it out. The unit pulls quite nice, even better than my P1K GP15-1 surprisingly enough. So, here comes the part that I had given up my ATSF late steam/early diesel era equipment and had settled into Big Blue in the early to mid 80's. Well, after pulling out the GP35 as my first "victim" so to speak, I began to do some research on CR 2269. Well, the factory model comes with PRR/PC style numbering on the cab. Well, that wouldn't do as the 2269 received CR style numbers after a bath in blue paint. So the first step was to remove the numbers. I have found a great trick to use, that WILL NOT damage your undercoat paint, a simple pencil pink (in my case green) eraser and just some simple elbow grease. Within 5 minutes, no cab numbers, and you have a clean surface to apply decals to. Used some Microscale CR decals, and here is the result. Before:After:Next up to add is a Sinclair antenna (a spare Atlas part) and Detail Associates 3 strap box, DA 2305.

Looking good so far! You may want to consider replacing that limp horn with a proper Leslie from Details West, and maybe a couple hose boxes for the pilots to do away with the detail-less footboards. By the time they made it to CR blue, the footboards were gone but the boxes remained.
Another trick I use with these bachmanns is to clip the cut levers at the midpoint where a brakeman would put his hand, so the ends would look proper, and the loop in the middle will be closer to the coupler. Just a sug...

Thank you. Actually, I got a supplier of great Atlas parts and he sent me some nice new sturdy 3 chimes, but that'll mean having to plug and re-drill the hole on the top of the cab and then some minor paint work, and I am not sure that I can match the Bachmann version of CR blue as easy. I'll look into it though.

Ok, added some more small details today including the Sinclair antenna, the 3 strap cab signal box, and the "GP35" classification decals. I am still trying to decide if I want to cut off the end of the uncoupler bars or not. Also, for those wondering what paint I used, I used Testor's "French Blue" Acryl. It's about a 98% match to the color of blue Bachmann used on the DCC On Board models.

Nice looking model. I like the pencil eraser idea.
