Not all blue painter's tapes are equal .... as I found out as well. The best blue tape I found was by 3M and cost about double as much as the "regular" brand. It easily conforms over and into details and stays put.
Same old story - you get what you pay for ....

I tried using one of the big box brands ("Blue Hawk" or something like that). Pure junk. Went back to the good ol' 3M, no problems. BTW, 3M makes a "Delicate Surfaces" version. IIRC, that tended to pull up on one of my scale jobs.

Thanks for the tips, all! Both sound like good advice. Ever had that 'back of the mind' thought when buying something? Kinda figured that would be the case with the blue tape. I'll look for better quality blue tape or look into that Tamiya tape. Checking my LHS website, it appears they have it. Never noticed it before. Will check that out. Thanks much.

up tamiya tape is simply the best stuff you can get, there is a japanese brand of tape (that uses the same tape that the tamiya tape is mad out of) but has ultra thing lines and such, can't remember the name, but i got it from www.hlj.com, Hobby link japan.

I tried the Tamiya tape upon a strong recommendation, and quite frankly, I didn't care for it. To each their own - I'll stick with my 3M blue ....

For larger areas try Frogtape. Its more expensive than painters green tape but cheaper than Tamiya, but like the Tamiya, its coated with something to prevent paint from wicking under the tape via capillary action.

To add to the comments about 3M Blue painters tape: The older low-medium adhesion tape with a 1” width was very good for model work. It didn’t leave any tape residue on the model even after being on for several months.
However, the “new” low-medium adhesion tape, which has the same sku # 51131 79748 (but is now .94” wide) must have a different formula or mix for the adhesive. This new tape does leave residue regardless of how long the tape is on the model surface.
Because of the change in adhesive, I can no longer use 3M Blue painters tape on any model paint projects.
When my supply of the older 3M tape is gone, I'll switch to Tamiya.

The 3M tape I use is Medium Adhesion #2090 according to the inside of the roll and claims a 14 day removal period. Already tossed the wrapper, so I don't know what the sku number was. Just got it a couple days ago and it still works fine. (?)
I tried the green once (don't remember the brand though) and it didn't stick nearly well enough for me.

The green tape that slowfreight is talking about is much different from the green tape you would buy at say Home Depot. 3M's green tape for automotive applications is light green in color and used by body shops everywhere. If you have ever seen the show West Coast Customs or Trick my Truck. This is the same stuff they use to do all those paint jobs. You can either get it a a auto body supply house or I have seen it a Autozone as well. You will not find it in a hardware store. This is the tape I used all the time. Until I switched to Tamiya. I was very happy with it, but the main reason for the switch was. I could no longer get the Green 3M tape for free from work.

Just for clarification, the 3M Blue painter’s tape I commented on above has the number 2080 on the inside of the roll. The product name is Painters Tape for Delicate Surfaces. Another way to identify the new from old is that the new tape has orange printing on it that reads “Scotch Blue with Edge Lock #2080EL.”
The best way to describe the new adhesive is that has a “gummy” tackiness similar to the adhesive used on Post-it notes.

I was in the store today and asked about any tapes being discontinued and they said the 2090 that I use is not on the radar for being discontinued. (?)
The change in the adhesive you noted is no doubt due to that "Edge Block" that's been added to it. See if they can get the 2090 where you are.
