The "C" is actually a simplified image of "Chessie" the cat laying on a pillow. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chessie_(railroad_mascot)The 'ear' is the part sticking up in the cutout area of the "C". If I might make a suggestion that would improved these ol' Atlas models immensely, is to replace the handrail on the right side to eliminate the step in the railing. Roco made the gaff when they manufactured these models, arbitrarily copying the railing on the other side with the blower duct step. Using some Athearn stanchions and 30 thou wire should make it blend in to the rest of the railings.

I see where you are talking about now, on the side of the long hood. I was thinking you were talking about the low hood. Good eye for detail!

Also take into consideration if any of the loco's were repainted by either the Huntington or Cumberland shops the cat logo on the front of the nose could vary in height. If emd painted it then there was usually a gap between the vermillion and the top of the blue c. If the shops painted it then the gap can vary from a big one to actually overlapping. Best to consult prototype pics. I have actually seen pics of gp 40-2s that the blue panel on the top of the nose actually wrapped round the radius edge and extended a few inches down the nose sides.

Follow up question, on these locomotives, the signage that I have seen on the fireman's side toward the steps on the long hood side, it read something about merchant bank and security trust company. Was this signage on both sides of the loco?
