Hey Taylor, the car you're looking for is a Pullman Standard PS-1 Intermountain (kit) or Kadee PS-1s www.kadee.com/ca/50ps1/50ps1.htmI have the DT&I and Spruce falls cars, real sprung cushion frames!

Sean's suggestion is perfect especially since you're modelling the 1980's. The Kadee PS-1 will be perfect as the BAR cars still had their sliding cushion under-frames then. They got rebuilt with end of car cushioning in the late 1980's or early 1990's.
Whichever model you choose, you need one with a 9 foot door.

Thanks guys. Never really knew what PS stood for before but I assumed that 4921cf means the volume the car holds (in cubic feet) The Accurail cars are almost 10 bucks cheaper a pop...you really think it's worth it for the Kadee car, after all it's not an engine.

I'd go for the Kadee, the paint is impeccable as well... They're worth the money, that is if you don't need a fleet of them. You could get an Intermountain "State of Maine" one as well... www.intermountain-railway.com/ho/html/45916.htmOr the plain ol' kit, but be warned, Intermountain forgot to add the corner braces at the bottom of the doors that came on the cushioned cars. www.intermountain-railway.com/ho/html/40999.htmI had to add them when I built my DT&I Hydro 60 from the IM kit.

You guys are up late tonight. Gotta love the ole' EST I guess. Awesome car by the way.
I'd be hoping to build close to a dozen if I could. The plan is to start stockpiling/building rolling stock/locomotives in preparation for building my Gaspe themed layout. I'm going to need a lot of 50' newsprint boxcars between the three mills in Chandler, New Richmond and Atholville on the NB side and am hoping to run at least twenty car freights consisting of long strings of newsprint boxcars, pulpwood cars, woodchip hoppers, loaded centerbeams as well as unit copper ore concentrate trains running one way and 40' boxcars carrying copper ingots on the return run.
Strongly leaning towards the Accurail ones right now and painting/decaling them myself. Seeing as the cars are one solid colour and it would basically be a prime-paint-decal-weather-dullcote sort of deal I don't see it as more than a one beer job. The RTR Kadees certainly look awesome but I'm up for a challenge! Now to procure a decal set...back to the drawing board.

There's also the Robin's Rails kit of the 50' PS-1s, it should help your budget. They are abundant on ebay. www.ebay.com/itm/2-HO-Scale-Robins-Rails-Train-Cars-/221420205408#ht_294wt_985The problem with the Accurail is that its an ACF(?) prototype with old style dreadnaught ends. It is only close in length. Talk to me about decals when you're ready... Off to bed! BTW, you must nurse your beers....

And you figure those Robin Rail cars have the right ends?

What are you planning on using for the ore cars?

First a bit of background because this is going to come up sooner or later...
Basically large copper deposits were discovered near the town of Gaspe in the early 1950's and a huge open pit mine was subsequently built. The Gaspe Copper Mines, later Noranda Copper, near the town of Murdochville, QC only operated for 30 years or so, closing for good in 1998. During those 30 years however, somebody had the bright idea of building a copper ore smelter in Murdochville, which closed shortly thereafter in 2002. This was a flawed idea for the most part as Murdochville is literally in the middle of nowhere.
The smelter/mine is about an hour and a half drive from the end of the line in Sandy Beach, near the town of Gaspe. They would truck copper ingots to Sandy Beach and transload them into 40' boxcars for export via CN. Also, for a time, copper ore was brought in from elsewhere and transloaded at Sandy Beach, trucked up to the smelter and then exported again via CN.
Back to your point, I honestly have no idea. I have few contacts that have ever seen them hauling ore into Gaspe and no one seems to remember what they were hauled in. I should add that the copper trains were as needed, extras. I have three options that could have happened, they sparsely loaded boxcars much like they did with coal or grain, used gondola cars (as the only way of transloading would have been by excavator) or they used actual ore cars or hopper cars (most unlikely) I'll let you guys know if I ever find out more.
Also, what's with the Prince Edward Island Railway C424 you've got there? I'm actually from/live on PEI and a few buddies of mine model the PEIR in the late 60's.

Sean, lets not make assumptions on the available PS1 boxcars, The Intermountain PS1 is correct for its time period as it represents a car from the introduction of the PS1 to 1962, and the Robbins Rails car covers the same period, although with somewhat heavier ladder castings. The E&C car covers the cars built from 1962 to the end of the inside post PS1 construction and has the reinforcement under the doors as noted on your DT&I car. The major problem with this car is the shallowness of the detail which can be addressed by carving off the ladders and substituing extra ladders from your scrapbox, I have tons of the Intermountain 4 rung ladders. See below for an E&C car I modified. The Kadee cars I cannot comment on as I only have one of DT&I cars and have never built one of their undecorated kits. Rick J

Hey Rick, wassup!?!?!? Been awhile! I don't recall that I made any assumptions on the available PS1s; - Kadee - Intermountain - Robins Rail - E&C Did I miss something? But can we agree that 'shallowness' can be interpreted as 'crudest'?

Sean as I stated Intermountain did not forget to add the corner braces, their version of the car, pre 1962 did not have them! Rick J

Anyways, I'll probably pick some up in the coming months. I've got a lot of projects on the go right now, from Railliners to SD40u's and everything in between to clean up first!
Thanks guys!
