I have had the old MDC unit and a few Atlas and then stewart . I never really paid attention . They all looked good to me.
Right now and lately I have a few stewart units. I made on into a hammerhead . I thought at one time and got the details associates hammerhead kit yet I found the casting terrible and to wide for the stewart shell . I used a second stewart shell short hood end to make the taller hammerhead and just built up the short hood sides with sheet styrene so it was the proper height and then used the roof to finish it off.
When one states a stewart shell roof contour is wrong is the curve to round or flat or what?
I made a hammerhead out of two atlas RS3 shells once but atlas plastic does not glue very well .
I must say the old MDC side frames were correct . not as nice as the later PK2 trucks but close .
I wanted to build one of the Alco/EMD re-builds C&NW had and Katy had . I have done the As616/EMD units.
I'm not certain but from the photo's of the alco /EMD it looks like they just used an EMD GP9 long hood on a RS3 frame with the RS3 cab and short hood . similar to the baldwin/EMD units.
All I can remember is seeing articles years ago using the stewart shell on an atlas drive stating the stewart was the best rendition.
