FEC 714

Just about ever since I started modelling in HO I've wanted a model of FEC 714. So I finally got around to starting one. The engine is an Athearn Blue box that I painted with Testors rattle cans and handbrushed Apple barrel craft paints (of all things, LOL. Lots of sanding and thin coats works pretty good). I haven'r finished decaling it yet. After decaling, it will receive a dullcote layer and then I'll start adding the details. Nothing super, just the basics. Plow, grab irons, AC unit, brass horn, and some MU cables and it will certainly be good-looking in my eyes. Minus DCC the cost so far is around $60.

Thanks guys. Been busy this week but I'm fairly quiet this weekend so I may be able to finish it up minus DCC.

Put the Dullcote on today. Should finish applying the details and light weathering this week, then it will be complete! (Minus DCC, but I dont even have an operational layout right now so it doesnt really matter)

Mounted the horn and AC unit tonight after the Dullcote dried. Still have to do plow, MU cables and grab irons. I'll do just a tad of weathering then seal it off later this week and it will be done!

Been over a week since I have posted any progress. I'll post pictures tonight of the grab irons I mounted over the weekend. Barely looks like a Blue Box model any more, minus the stupid mounting things at the frame and the gaping hole for the couple in the back. I need to figure out how to mount my Cal-Scale brass plow on the front. Its got two pins on it but doesn't say what size holes to drill. Any ideas?

That looks real nice Baxter. The one thing that really stands out that doesn't look good is that brakewheel. Have you thought about changing it?

Looks sweet. Rather than a plain dulcoat finish I mix a ratio of about 3-1 clear and flat finish coats. I don't think that a totally flat finish looks realistic. You can decide how flat or shiny you want it to look for you.

Wow! Love that colour scheme! You've used one of the early BB SD40-2s as the basis of your model, good work! If I could make one suggestion, your MU hoses on the front and glued on backwards. The pin sticking out is supposed to go into the pilot plate, no biggie tho. If you're a big FEC modeler, Highball graphics has the breast cancer GP40s set if you're interested. They're not in the catalogue, but he has them. www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=453405

Thanks for the complements and criticisms. :-) Also, iomalley, thanks for the telling me about that Highball graphics set, I am a big modern FEC modeler so I will need at least one of those at one point. I currently have 3 SD70s, 3 SD40s, and 3 GP40s painted for FEC, and I'm always looking for good deals on more.
