I'm all thumbs, but managed to become proficient at soldering magnet wire to smd leds. I would recommend buying magnet wire with different colour coating. The auburn is most common, but green is also available. The reason is that as you may know, the led is polarity sensitive. This avoids the task of testing with a battery, to make sure the connections are with the right polarity, with the engine's electrical system.
