Hi Sean. The centrifugal clutch (winds up) with the motor running then at a certain point everything starts to move. My step father had a Hobbytown E7 with a Cary body and the clutch & it was a good runner, I don't remember if it was a good seller but I still have that engine along with a large pile of other Hobbytowns that my step father collected while working at Hobbytown.

Sean, I've not seen this Hobbytown version before, but in the UK, a guy called Stellan Brimalm sold a modern version under the Starline Drive brand ( I think) along with other driveline components such as reduction gearboxes. The flywheel-equipped motor starts turning, but the clutch being open, doesn't drive. When the motor reaches a certain speed, the clutch bites and the whole ensemble moves. The idea is that the motor doesn't have any torque at slow speed but has good torque at higher revs. Equally, when motor speed drops, the clutch disengages, which means the flywheel turns the final drive but doesn't have to turn the motor. All this allows better starting, better running over electrically bad track and provides a momentum that gives the impression of 100 tons of moving loco, not a plastic HO model!

Hey thanks guys!
Sounds like I should keep my eyes open for one, just for nostalgia-sake (like my NYC Hobbytown RS3)...I'm certainly not paying $35 for the Ebay one!

Hey, that brings back some memories! When I was a kid, I remember one of the guys in the local MRR club had an EMD switcher with one of these clutches in it. It was really cool. The engine would sit there, stationary, but the motor was turning at low RPMs. It was the closest thing we had to DCC back in the day! NEAT STUFF! Thanks for sharing!
