So, my dad purchased this pair of Union Pacific Alco cab units based on memories of CP leasing them during 1964. But having a layout set in 1973, couldn't justify their existence more then the odd running. (that and the fact between these, NYC and CP FAs, had over a dozen!) So off to the swap meets and ebay to try to sell. But with starting bid below $35 a piece and no takers, thought I could build some cool weird units, and fetch a few more $$ once complete... So UP FA-1 gets sold to the Long Island RR to convert to a cab car 612... And UP FB-1 goes north to become a robot car for the PGE.

Sean,
Interesting builds. Always interesting what you come up with. I have a A/B set of FA2s that I have no clue what to do with. I think you just inspired me to look at something odd ball.
Thanks,
Alex

I like the LIRR power car. I got a ride on one once. My uncle was a LIRR engineer. My friend and I were in Oyster Bay buffing. We were talking to the engineer, and I told him who my uncle was. We got to ride to Mineola.

That's cool! Was it noisy without the prime mover? The ATSF caboose gave up its windows to the UP...er PGE Had to go to the swap meet in Ancaster today to get that caboose for $2, it was holding the project up...guy was wondering why I wasn't going for the nicer CN or GTW one for $4..."gonna take the hacksaw to 'er!"

Nice work on those two! I never liked UP's much myself. Got a UP GP7 recently and it's all ready for stripping and Canadianizing...

Sean, the PGE robot car is pretty neat, nice job modeling one.
How were these used? Are they a slave unit with traction motors and powered by a "mother" or were these like the SOU radio cars? Not very familiar with PGE ops whatsoever...:-(

They were like the SOU radio cars, allowing the head end to connect to the mid-train helper units and control them remotely. I'm not 100% sure, but there may have been an air compressor in there as well to boost train air, but I doubt it cuz the ex GM B unit RCCs that BC Rail had didn't have fuel tanks...

Very cool! What era did the BCOL unit work in?

Well from what I can gather, RCC1 was traded in to Alco in 1968 by the SP&S so PGE probably got ahold of it soon after. PGE changed to BC Rail in 1972 and I found pictures of RCC1 still in PGE livery in 1976. So RCC1 looked like my model for at least 8 years in the early to mid 70s. It was repainted into BCOL probably 1976/77 and soldiered on until the mid 80s with pics I found of it in 1985.
I'm intrigued though, I'm willing to bet that PGE paid SP&S the trade in credit for these B units cuz it doesn't make sense that they would travel across the continent to Alco and return to the west coast. PGE would also benefit from the guts of these FBs to keep their RS3s and RS10s running into the early 80's. Anybody know?

Hey, I just discovered something... LIRR 612 was originally built SP&S 856A1, and PGE RCC1 was originally built as SP&S 866B1 The were probably coupled together more than once in real life and here they've come together on my workbench!
