Athearn's SDP45 has gotten me inspired to create a locomotive to run with my GN F45. It would be much easier to just purchase an athearn sdp45, but where's the fun in that? I've decided to make an sdp40, and have so far collected a kato sd40 shell and sill, an atlas sdp35 shell and sill, and a cannon & co nose and cab. I'm not quite sure how to go about the frame. My ideas are to either use the kato one from the sd40, an athearn sd40 one, or modify a spectrum sd45 frame to fit. If you have any ideas or suggestions for this, or for any part of the locomotive, please don't hesitate

Athearn BB tunnel motor drive would be my choice as it is the right length. If I can't pick any up dirt cheap when the time comes, I will modify Kato drives. This is for SD40A loco's I want to make which are the same as the SDP40. Matthew

Back when I did my BN SDP40, I used a Kato SD45 side sill, cab and nose and a SD40 long hood. I cut the rear end of the long hood off, just behind the grill and the last door and built it from styrene, cannon roof stock and various other cannon parts. I think the thread is somewhere in the Emd section. Sam

While I gather parts and start work, can anyone who has painted a locomotive big sky blue tell me what they used for the gray color in the scheme?

Weathered Black, Polly Scale version worked well for me.
