Sure help is here. What colors are you thinking? Is there a paint scheme you like that has been done already by a different railroad? What type of engines are you planning are using? What time frame are you looking at modeling?

I like the western pacific passenger paint scheme. It's a chop nose gp9 and modeling around 1970

So you want to use those same colors? Orange and silver?

I want to keep the orange but can't think of anything to replace the silver.

Are you resurrecting the Carson & Colorado Railroad?
I just looked at the route map (http://carsoncolorado.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/CCRoute.jpg) and it looks to be a pretty cool line.
It looks like it would mostly be a 4 axle line and I think four axle lashups would look great. Early geeps. So you are set in the early 1970's. Do you have a reason for existing? meaning what does your railroad serve? What type of railroad is it? Bride line or stand alone and who do you interchange with and where? You might find that building the storyline and history is as much fun as buiding the models.
If you are modeling late '60's early '70's, you do not have to worry so much about FRA rules like contrasting colors on the end railings and reflective sill stripes. You have a lot of potential with this railroad. Think well before commiting to your power. You could do some really cool stuff. It could easily be an Alco line or a mix of Alco and early EMD.
Also, the scenery for a layout would be great as well. Your in the Sierra Nevada range. I have been through that area a few times and it is very nice through there.

The C&C is going to be a mix of first generation EMD and Alco 4 axle locomotives in C&C's own paint job and some still in the original roads paint. The primary comodity will be ore and will interchange with the southern pacific. That's the bacic info on my version of the Carson And Colorado railroad so far.

As I mentioned, your railroad has a lot of potential. I read the history/ time line for the prototype railroad Carson & Colorado. You could really do some great things with it.

What I think you should first do is write a new history to develop YOUR Carson & Colorado Railroad. The original C&C was a narrow gauge line. you need to put in how it became a standard gauge line also how it became its own entity and then build up its traffic and industry. By all means I am not telling you what to do, but it really helps to develop the story line and history and then you can start adding equipment. You can see my storyline here www.6axlepwr.com/COPPER_STATE_RAILWAY_cover.html. I have very strict standards that I stick to for my railroad to make it believable. Albeit, I know it is fictional, but I still like the challenge to make it believable per prototype standards. At the St. Louis RPM show I had a number of people asking me if my railroad was a real road. There are a number of railroaders on this list that can help with prototype operation questions. I have a number of friends who have helped me with questions I had on how I set up my road. I was always a prototype modeler, but getting into proto freelancing has made this hobby so much more enjoyable. For me it is even more challenging to build the story and then transforming that into your models. Loads of fun.

canadaandsouthern,
I suggest you start a new thread here called CARSON & COLORADO RAILROAD UPDATE and use it to discuss all that you are doing with your railroad. This way you can keep all your discussions under one roof and refer back to them when fellow members have good information that you want to use.

Orange and black is an idea. You ought to look at builder photographs from the 1950s. EMD produced paint schemes. They had a few styles, and either modified it slightly, or used just different colors. D&RGW had the same scheme as B&M. The logos were changed, as was the colors. Black and yellow, vs. maroon and gold.
If it is a small roster, go hog wild. If you plan a large roster, an elaborate scheme may get to be too tedious.
