Occasionally I take small breaks from what my current projects are to start a new project. Just a diversion to keep me motivated. I have a LOT of modeling time. Pretty much all day except for when I am at work. So I will set maybe one day a week aside to work on something else other than the current project. Helps me get started on my next project without going all out on it yet. I am starting to gather information on the next build. Or maybe not really the next build, but something I want to work on and eventually get finished. My actual next build will probably be the SDP45 when it comes in. SO, I am starting a diversion project. I will set maybe Wednesdays aside to work on it from time to time.
This locomotive is a mystery to me right now. At first I thought it was a standard SD40-2 with Type II flexicoil trucks under it. Now though I am not so sure. Looking it over more and more I think its heritage is N&W. I think it is an ex N&W SD40 rebuilt to an SD40-2. Completely rebuilt.
1. The porches are much shorter than a -2.
2. The -2 has more low stanchions on the left side after the blower duct.
What makes this locomotive very appealing to me to model is the fact that it is a mishmash of SD40 and SD40-2 parts.
1. It sports a -2 cab.
2. Has an 88" nose with access hatch on top.
3. Has -2 dynamic brake hatch with bulges.
4. Has corrugated radiator grills.
5. Brake wheel located at long hood end.
6. ECAFB welded in behind cab.
7. Triple clasp Type II flexicoil trucks.
Well, just looking over the photo references of this unit again. Points #2,3,4 & 6 make sense since the entire long hood, clean air room, cab and nose appear to be from a -2. From what I can tell, this is an SD40 chassis with a -2 transplanted onto it. NdeM had a few SD40's with triple clasps and I understand Ferromex purchased some ex N&W SD40's and put them through a rebuild program to bring them up to -2 specs. This project is getting more appealing as I go.
Thanks to Bob Harpe, I have a Kato SD40 to start with. I have the Athearn side frames to graft onto the Kato trucks and have the additional Blomberg side frames to cut the brake claps from to build the new trucks. I also have an Athearn Conrail SD40-2 that I can steal the long hood and clean air room from or I could just build one from scratch and put it on the Kato chassis. I can use the fuel tank from it as well.
The best starting point for this model will be the trucks. Once I finish those, the rest is a piece of cake. This is going to be an exciting build.
