Hello again, I started this project last winter and finally finished my second of two RS-18's. This was my first build and I would certainly do it again. The RS-18 is easily my favorite locomotive. These started off as old Atlas-Kato RS-11's from ebay with new paint and lots of detail parts. This is the recently finished one. I'm quite happy with how the weathering turned out on this one. As for the second one, im not as happy with the weathering. I used enamal paints instead of arcyllic based and they didn't thin as well as I hoped. 3709 and 3650 elephant style. The photos in the background are of my grandfather's retirement party/ last run on CN 3624. a few years ago I contacted a retired carman from the Gordon Shops in Moncton who had helped scrap 3624. He saved the numberboards and sold me two of them. I also have the banner that was hung from the front handrails, except it now hangs from my layout fascia.

The weathering looks really light here, especially in the first photo, but its really not.

Aside from hanging retiree's safety vest in the lunchroom at London East, there's little fanfare in retirements for CN folks these days.
Why didn't you model 3624?

I've seen lots of these banners in photos over the years, things are different today I guess.
I thought about modelling that unit but I decided that I would model it later, when my skills got better. I'm gonna pick up another RS-11 as soon as I find another cheap one and do it then. I'm thinking about repainting the second one. I'm not really inmpresed with the weathering and I painted the stripes instead of using decals and they're a little thick.
I'll post some more photos later. I didn't realize but I forgot to add numbers to the numberboards, drill out the headlights and paint the louvers and grilles flat black.

Did you use the MBE RS18 conversion parts or styrene to remove the notches on the ends of the hoods?

I used the MBE parts for almost everything, including the corners. I didn't like how 3650 turned out (I used decals for the stripes and they didn't sit right, so I tried to hide it with weathering) Here is that same engine repainted: Front: And Back:

I used the brass corners too, I like them cuz they won't shrink like putty will. ATlas always looks good compared to that Hobbycraft abomination...
Looks good Taylor!!

Great job on that RS18!
So, are the stripes painted on? Did you spray the white on first then mask out the white striped areas for the black paint?

Exactly how I did it Dan. I redid the other engine too, I'll have to get a photo of it up here sometime. Hopefully I can get a hold of Eric, as I need more resin parts, but I haven't had much luck.
